A.Questions for Communicative Strategies

1.How do different communicative strategies to help in the communication process?

Communication happens because participants in the context want to achieve something that is why they
involve themselves in the process. Communicative strategies help in the communication process in various
ways. Each strategy has its own purpose, but they all help to achieve better communication. When introducing
a topic at the beginning of a communicative situation, what is being used is the nomination strategy. This
scheme is effective to start a conversation with others, it also allows the one who initiates the discourse to
achieve his goal(s) since the topic is introduced in a clear and truthful manner, stating only what is relevant to
keep the interaction focused. When one wants to attain specific answers or responses he needed, the
restriction communicative strategy is the best technique to use because it constrains or restricts the feedback
of the other person involved in the communicative situation. The listener is forced to respond only within a set
of categories that is made by the speaker. Thus, it is very effective to be used when one needed immediate yet
accurate answers. To have smooth communication, participants should observe the turn-taking strategy. This
requires each speaker to speak only when it is his/ her turn during the interaction, providing a polished
discourse. For a conversation to continue and get the necessary pieces of information, topic control should be
used. This is simply a question-answer formula that moves the discussion forward. This also allows the listener
or other participants to take turns, contribute ideas, and continue the discussion, resulting in a better dialogue.
When there is a need to introduce another topic to be discussed, topic shifting is the best communicative
strategy to be used. This strategy works best when there is follow-through so that new topic continues to be
tackled. For clarification purposes, a repair strategy should be used to enlighten subject matters that seem to
be confusing or not well-explained, this makes sure that the communication process is continuously going
better. And once the conversation is done, termination should be used. As it offers ways or courteous manners
and ways to end the discourse. Communicative strategies really assist everyone involved in the
communication process to have better experiences in the discourse. Although they vary from each other, they
undoubtedly contribute to the success of a communication process.

2. Do different communicative strategies work together to achieve better communication? How?

Although communicative strategies differ from each other and have different purposes, they perfectly work
together to achieve better communication, and of course to attain certain goals. A specific example is a
workplace, in a business meeting for a certain launch of the product. Communicative strategies will now play a
crucial role in this scenario. To initiate a suggestion, a member of the board can use a nomination strategy to
voice out his suggestions about the particular product, on how will it be more presentable to the market. For
better discussion, one can also use restriction and topic control strategies to limit the responses and get the
most suited suggestion for the innovation of the product. Everyone can also use turn-taking as the scheme that
allows every member of the meeting to say-so their recommendations. The repair can be also significant as it
provides everyone to clarify their points and understanding of the matter. Topic shifting allows moving to
another subject to be discussed. And lastly, termination can be used as the ending signal that the discussion
has been finished and successful. These strategies used in a business meeting really help the members to
achieve a better and successful communication process and greatly aided them to attain their goals. Of
course, these communicative strategies when used in different contexts will surely result in a better outcome in
the communication procedure.

C. Watch the video Chairing a Meeting. Write the acceptable, polite, and meaningful expressions and
identify the strategy of communicative competence used.

The following points are the ones I have noticed from the video about chairing a meeting:
•In presiding a meeting, greetings are always observed. Expressions like "good morning everyone", "thank you
so much for being here on time" are some of the expressions used in conducting a meeting that is really
essential and should be observed at all times.

•Appreciation and acknowledgments are also presented in the meeting. Expressions like, "that sounds
reasonable..", "okay good" and "I really appreciate.." are some phrases used by the chairman to highlight and
take into account the achievements of his employees.

•Engaging other members to voice out their comments, suggestions, and others are also observed in the
meeting. Which are commendable as it encourages the employees to share their thoughts that can help to
have better outcomes.

•Limiting discussions also are presented in the meeting which enabled them to discuss more issues.

Acceptable, polite, and meaningful expressions found in the "chairing a meeting video":

•Good morning, everyone.

•Thank you very much for being here on time.

•Good.

•Thank you and to your team for all hard work.

•Perhaps, I can begin by asking you to fill us in on your progress?

•Thank you very much indeed paul.

•Sure, thank you.

•I really apprecite it.

•Okay, good we are all okay to move on to the next point.

•Thank you very much for emailing the current figure to all of us.

•I hope that we've all has time to look at them to read.

•I'm sorry, can we continue this discussion after lunch?

The following are some of the communicative strategies that are presented in the meeting:

•Nomination strategy was used in order to start the agenda for that meeting. The lines like, "Has everyone
has a copy of the agenda" and "Can I draw your attention to item 4?" are sample expressions that let the
chairman start the discussion.

•Restriction strategy was also observed in the meeting. Expressions like, "So, item 1 is relocation and plans
for flexible working…" This lets the chairman focus on this topic and have his employees share their insights
about this issue.

•Turn taking strategy was also utilized in the assembly. Expressions like," is where you want to add before
we open up this question", "and what do other people think?" This strategy lets the employees share their
insights about the agenda for the meeting.

•Topic Control strategy was also employed in the meeting. The line, "and do you agree with Maya that we
need to look through the proposal in more detail first?", "IT will have the highest cost attached to this relocation
but in the figures…" This encouraged everyone to keep the topic for further discussion and maintain the
interaction between the employees and the chairman about the said issue.

•Topic Shifting strategy has also applied the meeting. Expressions like, "okay good, are we all okay to move
on to the next point.", "moving on to item 3…" This clearly pointed out that the next topic will be discussed in
the meeting. And also, it let them talk further points about the meeting.

•Repair strategy was also conducted in the meeting. Expressions like, "So, do you mean in any IT cost related
to say marketing…" This let one of the employees to clarify the topic and whether he understood it clearly or
not. This is essential in the meeting as it allows everyone to clear things out.

•Termination strategy was also used in the meeting to end the meeting. "Let's take a break now…" was the
line that adjourned the discussion. It is very essential in courteously ending conservation with others.
