ACTIVITY 1 DIMENSION OF COMMUNICATION

Identify the Dimensions of Communication involved in the following:

1. Sarah agreed to be in-charged of the decoration for the party but did not even smile while doing her task.

The Dimension of Communication used in this situation is Verbal/ non-verbal. In this context, Sarah agreed that she is
the one assigned for the decoration for the party, that her agreement to this is done through words of course (verbal).
However, her facial expression (nonverbal) seems to contradict her actions, that she even did not smile while doing her
job. This can cause miscommunication between her and her colleagues. Her friends might misunderstand her actions,
that she did not really want what she is doing, that she might just be forced to do so because she couldn't refuse it,
where in fact, she is one the agreed to her task. Facial expressions, gestures, and other non-verbal communication
should be aligned with the words or verbal communication of someone used to avoid confusion. Words accompanied
with the right non-verbal expressions in the right context resulting in a better and clearer communication process. As
verbal and nonverbal communications are inclined with each other, their purposes, miscommunication will rarely or do
not happen at all.

2. Mark expressed his interest to become the class president; his classmates thought of it as a joke.

The Dimension of Communication used in this situation is an Intentional/unintentional. In this scenario, Mark clearly
voiced out his interest in running as the class president, but his classmates perceived his actions as a joke to them. There
are several reasons behind his classmates' actions, one could perhaps, while he was showing his interest in the position,
the choice of words he used might be inappropriate and his tone could also not inclined to what he really wanted to
convey, that is why his classmates thought this was a joke only. Or maybe because Mark has a "bad reputation" in his
class and it negated his aspiration to be the class president. Words are used to express ideas and are intended to have a
particular meaning. Sometimes these words communicate something other than what is intended - they have an
unintentional meaning.

3. Even Joana really wants to lend his books to Jaime she said “Go and get my books so that you may learn!” with
an angry voice.

The Dimension of Communication used in this scenario is Intentional/unintentional. In this context, Joana certainly
wanted Jamie to borrow her book but her choice of words, the tone, volume, and emotion of them contradicted his true
intention, and that is to let her friend lend her books. And her actions would of course confused her friends, she might
think that Joana was just forced to lend her books to her or she really did not want it to give them to her, in the first
place. Or in the worst-case scenario, Joana's word might be understood by Jaime as a mockery for her, her words, "Go
and get my books so that you may learn!” Her true intention to let her friend borrowed her books could insult her. To
avoid this, one should be precise about the choice of words he will use to communicate aligned with the right tone of
voice, volume, and others to express his or her true intentions in communicating.

4. Our provincial governor was invited to a speaking engagement but when he arrived, everyone was surprised
because he was just wearing shorts and a shirt as if he did not prepare for the occasion.

The Dimension of Communication used in this example is Formal/informal. In this context, a high government official
was asked to become a speaker for an assembly. Everyone, of course, is expecting the provincial governor to be
presentable as he was a government official and credible person, and yet, he was not dressed accordingly, his attire and
appearance negate his position and authority. The constituents might doubt that if he is appropriate and capable of his
position based on how he manages himself. His actions thus made the citizens misunderstood him. Formality or
informality of appearance, attire, language used and others depend on the settings and occasions. And one's job is to
identify it and act accordingly.

5. Mike encourages his students to face life’s struggles and obstacles with a positive outlook but the way he
delivers his words of encouragement is not convincing.

This Dimension of Communication used in this situation is "Intentional/ unintentional." In this scenario, Mike's true
intention is to give words of encouragement for his students to face and overcome their struggles in life, but he
delivered these in an unconvincing manner contradictory to his purpose, and that is to uplift their spirits. Again, in
communicating to someone, one must first set his true objectives in doing this, and second, it should be aligned on how
he will go to express this; with the right choice of words, tone, volume, and others to clearly point his ideas.
