True or False Test

1. Avoid giving hints in the body of the question.

Example:

*Adjectives are the words that modify a noun or pronoun.

If the word "describe" will be used instead of the word "modify", it will be a hint to the students, hence,
they can recognize that the statement is true.

2. Avoid using the words "always", "never" and other such adverbs which tend to be always true or
always false.

Example:

Intensive pronouns are (always) found after the subject of the sentence.

The statement can be true or false if the word "always" will be used. Intensive pronouns can be also be
found at the end of the sentence. Excluding the word "always" will be much better and hence, confusion
will be prevented.

3. Avoid long sentence which lead to be true. Keep sentences short.

Example:

*Verbs are words that express an action or a state of being and tells what the subject does.

Better:

*Verbs are words that express an action or a state of being.

4. Avoid systematic pattern for true and false statements.

Example:

True 1. Adjectives are words that describe, limit and modify a noun or pronoun.

False 2. Transitive verbs connect the subject to a word that idenfies or describe it.

True 3. Coordinating conjunctions are words used to show the relationship of a noun or pronoun to
some other word(s) in the sentence.

False 4. Adverbs are words used to describe a noun or pronoun.

True 5. Interjections are words used to express emotions.

*Notice that there is a pattern in the statements (True, False, True, False and True), this will make the
learners do not think and analyze the questions because they will just rely on the pattern they have
discovered.

Better:

True 1. Adjectives are words that describe, limit and modify a noun or pronoun.

False 2. Transitive verbs connect the subject to a word that idenfies or describe it.

False 3. Adverbs are words used to describe a noun or pronoun.

True 4. Interjections are words used to express emotions.

False 5. Conjunctions are words used to show the relationship of a noun or pronoun to some other
word(s) in the sentence.

There is no pattern in the statements that will give a hint to the learners, thus, they really need to read
and analyze each of the statements to be answered.

5. Avoid ambiguous sentences which can be expressed as true at the same time false.

Example:

Jean Piaget made a revolutionary discoveries about child behavior during the twentieth century.

*The statement can be true and false at the same time. True because Jean Piaget really made
revolutionary discoveries in the child behavior; false because it is actually in the 19th century where he
contributed such discoveries. Including ambiguous sentences will often result to confusion to the
students and will result to unsuccessful learning outcomes.
