ILLUSTRATED CHARACTERS IN CIVIL ENGINEERING:

Federico Villarreal Villarreal was a Peruvian mathematician, engineer, physicist,


and polyglot. Dean of the Faculty of Sciences and Rector of the Universidad
Nacional Mayor de San Marcos. He completed his primary education in his
hometown, and high school at the Colegio Nacional San José de Lambayeque. At
the same time he studied as a teacher of first letters, obtaining his degree in 1870,
thus being able to direct the public school in Túcume and then others in
Lambayeque.

In 1877 he entered the Faculty of Sciences of the Universidad Mayor de San Marcos
with a bachelor's degree in 1879 and a degree in 1880. He began studies at the
National University of Engineering, then called the School of Engineers, in 1882,
graduating as a civil engineer and Mine engineer . He taught at the University of San
Marcos, at the Military School and at the Naval School in courses of his specialty.
He also dabbled in politics, being elected Senator by Lambayeque in 1894 and 1912.

He was also dean of the Faculty of Sciences of San Marcos on several occasions, as
well as vice-rector, becoming rector of said university house in 1921.
Arthur Casagrande was born on August 28, 1902 in Austria. He traveled to the
United States in 1926 and settled for convenience. He worked in the Office of
Public Roads and as a research assistant under Terzaghi at MIT. He was "the
right hand" of Terzaghi for several years and made, or contributed to the
creation of, the foundations of Soil Mechanics. Later he became Professor of
Soil Mechanics. He also served as ISSMFE President in the 1960s. Master.
Professor Casagrande began the Soil Mechanics program at Harvard University
in 1932. Many of his students were inspired by Casagrande and entered the field
of Soil Mechanics; These men later became the creators of the field of
Geotechnical Engineering as it is known today.
