SJD DEADLINES FOR ACADEMIC YEAR 2020-21

September 14 Incoming SJD Candidates and Returning Candidates Who Wish to Make
Changes:
 Bio and photo for posting on Fordham Law website
November 16 Candidates not in Year 2 or 3:
 Request to present at Fall Workshop
 All candidates in year 2 or 3 are required to present
November 23 All Candidates Presenting at Fall Workshop:
 Submission of 10-20 pages
November 30 Fall Workshop
1:00 p.m.  All SJD candidates are required to attend for the duration of the event.
 Each candidate will have 45 minutes to present, including the question
and answer period. Candidates are required to moderate and complete
their presentation within the allotted time
 A detailed schedule will be circulated after November 16
December 13 SJD Progress Report, Signed by Supervisor:
 All SJD candidates
 Discuss progress made and a plan for the remainder of the academic
year
 All candidates beyond year 1 should indicate the expected date of
completion. There is a strong presumption that candidates meet their
expected completion date
 Candidates in year 2 should include the names of the members of the
Dissertation Committee
Complete Draft:
 Candidates in year 3 or beyond
April 12 Complete Draft:
 Candidates in year 3 and beyond
Updated Dissertation Work:
 Candidates in year 2
 Includes:
 Updated dissertation proposal
 Chapters drafted to date
 One-page summary of presentation for defense of proposal
 Expected date of completion
SJD Progress Report:
 Candidates in year 1
 Include expected date of completion and plan for coming academic
year
Request for Doctoral Fellowship:
 Candidates in year 1 and 2
 Request must be accompanied by confirmation from the supervisor that
s/he will be using the candidate as a Fellow for the following academic year
April 29 and 30 Dissertation Defenses:
Times TBA  Candidates presenting their defense will have a total of 1.5 hours to present
their doctoral work
Dissertation Proposal Defenses:
 Candidates in year 2 and beyond who are not defending their defenses
 Candidates will have a total of 50 minutes to present their proposals

Notes:
 All candidates are required to be present for the duration of the events
 Detailed schedule will be provided closer to the date

 All submissions are to be made to Assistant Dean Toni Jaeger-Fine, tfine@law.fordham.edu.
 Deadlines are at 5:00 p.m. on the date indicated. Late submissions will be noted and will affect a
candidate’s progress toward degree completion. This includes submissions that require approval
by the supervisor. Please plan accordingly.
