Stretford Weekly
Friday 8th October September 2010 Issue 4
This week I was bursting with pride to see students leading assemblies your
assemblies. The Student council elect spoke eloquently about their manifestos to
enable you to get a sense of what their student leadership would look and feel like.
It is no mean feat standing in front of your friends and an audience of 180 to speak.
Congratulations for your effort and bravery. Also a big well done to the fantastic
Year 7 student Hassan Amim who stood up to speak about Diabetes. Hassan spoke
with great knowledge and delivered a fantastic address. A great achievement for a
Year 7 pupil.
Open Evening was held last night and we welcomed over 80 families to the school
thanks to our Key 103 advert scripted by our Head Girl Shola Brown and delivered
by Head boy Dylan Dunn Hoban. Thankyou to the many students who helped out on
the night. The band in particular were fantastic – the first gig of many I hope. Your
efforts showed why Stretford High School has a soul. The prefects, students who
attended and our outstanding team of staff were as ever amazing. One Year 6
student said to his mum on the way out “Please let me come to this school mum,
they’ve even got Chickens”!
On to our chickens and as you may be aware we have decided on their names…..
We are eggstatic that we have four new members of our community. Please cluck
after them.
National Poetry Day was celebrated on 7th October with " Let them eat cake"
National Poetry Day Reading Club Event, based on Marie Antoinette's historical
comment to starving French peasants. It was the 6th National Poetry Day event to
be celebrated by the Reading Club. It tied in with the Poetry society's theme of
Home and the BBC's promotion of home baking for children. Thankyou Mrs Manuel
for organising the event.
I am also pleased to announce that our Y10 football team played Urmston
Grammar and drew 2 – 2. Despite unforeseen last minute changes to the squad our
boys played as a team with great spirit, attitude and effort to grind out a
performance against a team that contains no fewer than 4 Academy signed players.
What impressed me most was hearing that our team demonstrated the things that
football is really all about – togetherness and working towards a common goal. The
boys helped their coach in sorting equipment before and after the game, praised
each other when things were going well and motivated each other when things
when wrong. That’s team work and that is what gets you respect from staff, peers
and gets you to the top. Well done.
