MATTER AND MATERIAL

Q/A
D. What is the difference between the following?
1. Molecules of a chalk and molecules of water.
A. Molecules of chalk are closely packed as it is solid whereas water is liquid and its molecules are loosely
packed in comparison to solid.

2. Molecules of milk and molecules of carbon dioxide.

A. Milk is liquid and its molecules are loosely packed whereas carbon dioxide is a gas and its molecules are
very loosely packed in comparison to solid and liquid.
3. Lemon juice and Soda water.
A. Lemon juice is an example of liquid in liquid whereas soda water is an example of gas in liquid.

4. Salt in water and pencil shavings in water.

A. Salt is soluble in water whereas pencil shavings are insoluble in water.

E. Give reason:
1. Air is matter.
A. Air is a mixture of gases such as nitrogen, carbon dioxide, oxygen and other gases. It is matter as it occupies
space and has weight.

2. Liquids do not have a definite shape.

A. Liquids do not have a definite shape because the molecules of a liquid are loosely packed which enables
them to flow freely and take the shape of the container in which they are poured.

3. Gases spread easily.

A. Gases spread easily as the molecules of gases are very loosely packed in comparison to solid and liquid.
They do not have definite volume or shape.
4. When we dissolve sugar in water, the volume of water does not increase.
A. The volume of the water does not increase because when sugar is added to water it dissolves and occupies
the space between the water molecules.
