Business Established in 1991, Rotary and Mission Systems Integrated Systems (RMS
Environment IS), is a leading prime contractor and systems integrator responsible for a
[JP] wide portfolio of high technology programmes, complex integration, training
and through-life support, spanning the defence and civil sectors. The LM
RMS IS business, a leading provider of systems engineering, software
development and complex programme management for global security,
cyber, civil and commercial markets. This position is to support the System
and Programmable Elements (PE) Safety Programme for Merlin (notably
CROWSNEST), Maritime and Future Business pursuits. These programmes
include technology enhancements to the aircraft and maritime platforms,
ground preparation/analysis systems, training systems and support
infrastructure.

Specific Job The System Safety Engineer is responsible for supporting the Lead System
Description [JP] and Lead PE Safety Engineer in the implementation, co-ordination and
conduct of programme safety and environmental related activities.

This will include developing Safety Cases, associated safety arguments, and 
the identification and management of hazards inherent in the final product to
ensure that LM complies with both legislative and contracted Health and
Safety. 
In addition, PE Safety tasks may include performing PE specific safety
management activities, developing PE Safety Management Plans, and
associated audit plans / audits, safety cases, as well as associated safety
arguments and working with suppliers to achieve their compliance where
content is subcontracted.

Key Responsibilities

Under the direction of LM leadership, and/or Lead System and Lead PE


Safety Engineer, undertake the following tasks:

 Develop Safety Management Plans, including sub-contractor/supplier


interfacing elements
 Conduct Functional Safety Assessments for System and PE safety
aspects, such as Preliminary Hazard Analysis, System Hazard
Analysis, Sub System Hazard Analysis, Functional safety
assessment, Occupational and Operating Hazard Analysis.
 Derive System and PE safety requirements, including integrity
requirements
 Document System Level Safety Arguments, Safety Cases and Safety
Reports for System and/or PE Safety aspects
 Review subcontract safety documents.
 Support Project Safety Committees, Safety Review Meeting,
Technical Interface Meetings, Safety Review Meetings and Safety
Working Groups
 Conduct Zonals and physical safety audits.
 Demonstrate compliance with legislative requirements
 Support PE safety audits and manage findings to closure
 Support development of LM safety processes/procedures and
improvements 

 
Essential Educational Requirements

The System Safety Engineer will have a Bachelors degree from an accredited
college in a related discipline, and have experience in an engineering
discipline (one of which must be safety related).

(ASCE)
 Hazard Management using eCassandra
 Event Tree and Fault Tree development using Reliability Work Bench
 Programme Element Safety Summary (PESS) development in
accordance with Def-Stan 00-055
 Experience of the software development commensurate with Safety
Integrity Level 2 including safety aspects of software requirements
methodologies, design principles, Coding and verification
 Understanding of the impact of use of COTS equipment and/or of PE
reuse in a safety related environment

Desired skills,  Application of the required skills in a military aircraft environment


qualifications  Understanding of the Military Aviation Authority Regulatory Articles
and experience as they apply to Rotary Aircraft, in particular the RA 1200 series
[JP]  Understanding Def-Stan 00-970, and its application to Rotary
platforms
 Experience of the PE development commensurate with Safety
Integrity Level 3
 Auditing experience, PE in particular
