PROJECT 1

The United States Healthcare industry is one of the fastest-growing fields. Accounting for 11%

of all the jobs in the US economy which translates to more than 16 million people, with the field

projected to outpace all average occupations with an 18% growth by 2026 (Commins, 2019).

According to the Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services, “NHE grew 4.6% to $3.6 trillion

in 2018, or $11,172 per person, and accounted for 17.7% of Gross Domestic Product (GDP)”

(CMS, 2019). Due to the importance of the Healthcare Industry and its sheer size of $3.6 trillion

challenges are associated with leading it. The general problem to be addressed is the necessity

for strong leaders throughout all levels of the healthcare organizations. According to (Arroliga,

Huber, Myers, Dieckert, and Wesson (2014)

Health system leaders above 50 years of age were chosen to lead because of productivity,

published research, solid clinical skills, or because they were great educators. Sadly, most

of these leaders never received formal leadership training, but instead learned by

observing role models who were accomplished researchers, clinicians, or educators, but

were not formally trained leaders. (p. 247)

The specific problem to be addressed is in addition to having strong leaders throughout all levels

of the healthcare organization, is the relationship between leadership styles to the quality of care

provided. According to Sfantou et al. (2017) state that

There are numerous publications recognizing leadership style as a key element for the

quality of healthcare. Effective leadership is among the most critical components that

lead an organization to effective and successful outcomes. Significant positive

associations between effective styles of leadership and high levels of patient satisfaction

and reduction of adverse effects have been reported. (p. 2)
