CITIZENSHIP AMENDMENT ACT (CAA)

Citizenship Amendment Act is a bill passed by Lok Sabha represented by our Home Minister Amit Shah in 2019. The
main purpose of this bill was to provide citizenship to the five major religions of India namely Hindu, Sikh, Parsi, Jain,
Christian and Buddhist from three Islamic Countries Afghanistan, Pakistan and Bangladesh and amends the definition
of illegal immigrants for these religions. The requirements are must have resided in India during the last 12 months,
as well as for 11 (now 6 years) of the previous 14 years. This act excluded the mention of Muslim people because
Muslims have not faced any ill-treatment in the above mentioned countries. It is also believed that it violates the
section 14 of our constitution which states equality on the basis of religion, sex, caste, creed, colour etc.

Many people are protesting against it mainly of Muslims being excluded and if Indian constitution is secular or not.
CAA excludes only those Muslims, who have illegally entered India that is without passport and visa or stays for
longer period than allowed. Rest, The CAA will provide citizenship to illegal non-Muslim migrants from three
countries and who have entered India before December 31, 2014. The bill is mainly for maintaining the registered
record of every Indian citizen just like every other country. The protest is headed towards Hindu-Muslim agenda
which is driven for political benefit only. The main purpose of this act is to provide shelter to the legal ones facing
oppression from the three Islamic countries.

At the end, I’d like to state that everyone has their own opinion to agree or disagree. The disagree one can protest
but it should be done without any violence or under influence of politics.
