Four engineers were sent overseas by a construction company to manage a new project site in Southeast Asia. When COVID-19 hit, two engineers decided to return home while two remained at the overseas site. The HR manager then worked closely with a Sydney Assistance Centre to regularly contact the two remaining engineers overseas to assess their wellbeing, answer any medical or security questions, and provide mental health support when one felt overwhelmed. This outreach program helped provide peace of mind for both the engineers working overseas and the HR manager.

ASSIGNEE OUTREACH SUPPORT IN ACTION Supporting physical and mental wellbeing on assignment:
A construction company sent four engineers overseas in
Southeast Asia to manage a new project site. In the middle of the project, COVID-19 brought about local travel restrictions and new health concerns. As an essential service, the site was allowed to stay open. The HR manager from their Perth headquarters contacted each engineer to discuss the option of returning home or remaining overseas. Two decided to come home, while two remained.
Solution:
Throughout the coming months, the HR manager worked
closely with the Sydney Assistance Centre to support the two assignees overseas. This outreach program meant that each engineer was proactively contacted to assess their wellbeing and provide support as needed.
This resource gave peace-of-mind to both the engineers and
the HR manager. It provided answers for any medical or security questions that the assignees had while also providing mental wellbeing support when one of them felt overwhelmed. It also provided regular reporting to the HR manager as an additional resource while managing the rest of the workforce.
