1.0 INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background

The Shell Petrol Station at Ulu Tiram experienced many days of heavy rain in
early December 2014. On 4th December 2014, there was a sudden movement on
part of the slope at the station. There is an urgent need to investigate the slope
movement.

1.2 Objectives of the report

The objectives of this investigation report are:-


i. To investigate the cause of the slope movement
ii. To provide recommendation to stabilize the slope

at the slope area within Shell Petrol Station, Ulu Tiram.

2.0 SITE VISIT

Site visit and discussion were conducted on 5th December 2014 to find the cause
of slope movement and identify the method to stabilize the slope.

3.0 HAZARDS IDENTIFIED

Based on site inspection on 5th December 2014, geomorphologies observed on


slope area are summarized as follows:
• Erosion on the slope
• Tension cracks
• Crack on berm drain
• Stagnant water on berm drain
• PVC drain pipe clogged
• Crack on drain shoulder
• Grasses in silted drain
• Bare spots on slope surface

The geomorphological findings are elaborated below:

i. Erosion on the slope

There was erosion landslide observed on the slope as shown in Plate 1 and 2 of
Appendix A.

The thickness of top soil observed within the landslide affected area was around
300mm. The length and width of the erosion was 5x8 m. The landslide on the
slope could be due to severe rain and thick top soil.

ii. Tension cracks

There were tension cracks located at the top slope as shown in Plate 3 of
Appendix A.

The tension crack could be due to water seepage near the house.

iii. Crack on berm drain

Cracked drainage was seen at the berm drain of the slope as shown in Plate 4 of
Appendix A.

The crack at drain is due to soil movement. The soil movement was caused by
softening of the base soil due to water ponding.

iv. Stagnant water on berm drain

The berm drain at the slope was seen stagnant with water as shown in Plate 5 of
Appendix A.

The stagnant water on berm drain could be due to clogged PVC drain pipe and
silted drain.

v. PVC drain pipe clogged

The PVC drain pipe was seen clogged partially with grasses at the slope as
shown in Plate 6 of Appendix A.

vi. Crack on drain shoulder

There was cracked on drain shoulder at the berm drain of the slope as shown in
Plate 7 of Appendix A.

vii. Grasses in silted drain

The drain was not properly maintained causing grasses to grow on the silted
drain.

The silted drain could be due to the exposed slope surface as shown in Plate 8
of Appendix A.

viii. Bare spots on slope surface

There were bare spots on slope surface as shown in Plate 9 of Appendix A.

This could be due to slow growth of grass and erosion effect from heavy rain.

4.0 FINDINGS FROM THE INVESTIGATION

Based on site visit and discussion conducted, the followings were concluded:-

i. Type of Movement

The erosion movement observed was Translational Surficial Landslide.


Throughout its length the depth of the movement is less than 300mm and did
not reach the geogrid material.

ii. Cause of Erosion

The cause of erosion was due to weakening of the top soil causing it to slide.
The top soil was bare at locations making it easy:-

a) to weaken under erosional effect of rain water


b) to absorb rain water.

Other factors that could contribute to the erosion is the clogged drain, silted
drain and water ponding on the drain

iii. Safety of Slope

Based on the site visit, it was observed that the slope was safe. It should not
affect the operation of the Shell Petrol Station.

However, immediate repair and continuous maintenance are required to


maintain the safety of the slope.

5.0 RECOMMENDATIONS

The recommendations to repair and maintain the slope are provided to cater for the
stability and maintenance of the slope. The actions to be taken should improve the
slope safety. The followings are recommendations for the slope (Table 1 and Table 2)

1 Tension crack to be filled with sand


2 The grasses, solid waste and silt to be removed from the drain

3 The clogged pvc drain pipe to be reinstated

4 The cracked drain and drain shoulder to be repaired


To undertake Electrical Resistivity Survey to determine the underground water

seepage flow within the slope area

1 Remove slope erosion debris within area identified or marked during the site visit

2 Soil filled Geocells are to be used to reconstruct the slope surface

3 Spot turfing with cow grass will then be implemented

Finally, suitable long root plants will be grown to assist the stability of the slope

surface.
