1.0 INTRODUCTION
1.1 Background
The Shell Petrol Station at Ulu Tiram experienced many days of heavy rain in
early December 2014. On 4th December 2014, there was a sudden movement on
part of the slope at the station. There is an urgent need to investigate the slope
movement.
Site visit and discussion were conducted on 5th December 2014 to find the cause
of slope movement and identify the method to stabilize the slope.

There was erosion landslide observed on the slope as shown in Plate 1 and 2 of
Appendix A.
The thickness of top soil observed within the landslide affected area was around
300mm. The length and width of the erosion was 5x8 m. The landslide on the
slope could be due to severe rain and thick top soil.
There were tension cracks located at the top slope as shown in Plate 3 of
Appendix A.
The tension crack could be due to water seepage near the house.
Cracked drainage was seen at the berm drain of the slope as shown in Plate 4 of
Appendix A.
The crack at drain is due to soil movement. The soil movement was caused by
softening of the base soil due to water ponding.
The berm drain at the slope was seen stagnant with water as shown in Plate 5 of
Appendix A.

The stagnant water on berm drain could be due to clogged PVC drain pipe and
silted drain.
The PVC drain pipe was seen clogged partially with grasses at the slope as
shown in Plate 6 of Appendix A.
There was cracked on drain shoulder at the berm drain of the slope as shown in
Plate 7 of Appendix A.
The drain was not properly maintained causing grasses to grow on the silted
drain.
The silted drain could be due to the exposed slope surface as shown in Plate 8
of Appendix A.
This could be due to slow growth of grass and erosion effect from heavy rain.

Based on site visit and discussion conducted, the followings were concluded:-
i. Type of Movement
The cause of erosion was due to weakening of the top soil causing it to slide.
The top soil was bare at locations making it easy:-
Other factors that could contribute to the erosion is the clogged drain, silted
drain and water ponding on the drain
Based on the site visit, it was observed that the slope was safe. It should not
affect the operation of the Shell Petrol Station.

5.0 RECOMMENDATIONS
The recommendations to repair and maintain the slope are provided to cater for the
stability and maintenance of the slope. The actions to be taken should improve the
slope safety. The followings are recommendations for the slope (Table 1 and Table 2)

Finally, suitable long root plants will be grown to assist the stability of the slope

Bare spots
