Chapter X Sloka 42

अथवाबहु नैतेन कं ातेनतवाजु न।

व ट याह मदं कृ नमेकांशेनि थतोजगत ् ।।10.42।।

Bhagavan Sri Krishna, concludes this chapter, with this sloka.

अथवा - otherwise
Earlier, Bhagavan had said that, one should recognize the
manifestations of Ishwara’s glorious nature, wherever one sees
greatness. One should understand, the greatness of all great things, as
the prominent expressions, of Bhagavan’s Vibhuti, and as the
manifestations, of His grace.
Otherwise,
Etena bahunaa jnaatena kim – by understanding it too well, what do
you gain?
Tavaarjuna should be split - as ‘Arjuna’ and Tava
‘Tava’ means - for you
Bhagavan says:
Arjuna! What are you going to gain, by knowing all this, in so much
detail?

It can be put in a single sentence. This whole universe is a Vibhuti.

Taking up things in the universe, one by one, and meditating upon each
one of them, is one method. It will create good impressions, and help
form good samskaaraas, in our mind.
Finally, whatever one sees - the good, the bad and the in between -are
all, but a speck in Ishwara’s vibhuti. The sun, the moon and all the
innumerable galaxies - are all manifestations, of Ishwara’s vibhuti.
The Vedas say, ‘Paadosya viswa bhuutani tripaada-syaamritam divi’
This whole world, that we witness, is just a quarter of Bhagavan’s glory.
The rest of it - the remaining three-fourths - is unknown to us.

Bhagavan says that, in the next line:

Idam kritsnam jagat aham
In this whole Universe, ekaamsena sthita: aham
I am holding this entire Universe, through a fraction of my power.

That which is - visible and comprehensible to us - is about a quarter

portion.
That which is - invisible and incomprehensible to us - is the remaining
three-fourths portion.
Talking, of what we know, as a quarter - is but figurative. When the
whole is unknown, how can one define, the quarter! Just as, how there
is no limit, to one’s learning, so is there, no limit to Bhagavan’s glories.

So, Bhagavan says, that He is holding the entire Universe, by a fraction

of His power.
Vishtabhya sthita: - One commentator says, that it is like the metal
strings, holding the umbrella, and the pillars, holding the roof, of a
house. These are just simple descriptions, meant only, for empirical
understanding. But in reality it is like the water - that holds the waves,
and the sea. The substance that underlies - the word ‘waves’ and the
word ‘sea’ - is nothing but water.

I hold all these things. I am the entire Universe, says Bhagavan.

So, meditate upon the fact, that this entire Universe is, but a small part
of me. This Vibhuti, is to broaden our mind. This becomes the seed, for
the next chapter. The next chapter is about, meditating upon the entire
Universe - as Viswarupa Ishwara. That is how, Bhagavan concludes this
chapter.

‘Arjuna! What are you going to gain, knowing all the Vibhutis?’ asks
Bhagavan. Know this entire Universe, to be My Vibhuti, says Sri Krishna.

Just as, there are many tiny particles, seen in the sun’s rays, that fall
into a room, through a hole, so are there many heavenly bodies - some
of them, even much larger than the earth, and revolving in the outer
space. We should expand our mind, by meditating upon the large
expanse, of this creation. This would be the purport, of the upcoming
Vishwarupa darshan.

We have studied, the meanings of the Vibhutis, in fair amount of detail.

May Bhagavan forgive us, for any error, in our study - either in
pronunciation of the words, or in understanding of their meanings. May
He grace us further, with better understanding.

Now let us see, the Purti vaakyam

Om Tat Sat
iti śrīmadbhagavadgītāsūpaniṣatsu brahmavidyāyāṃ yōgaśāstrē
śrīkṛṣṇārjunasaṃvādē Vibhuti yōgō nāma dasamo'dhyāyaḥ
Sri Krishnarpanamastu

We have, been seeing the meaning of this Purti vaakyam, at the

conclusion, of each of the earlier chapters. Let’s anyway, recap it now.
By saying - Om Tat Sat - we seek the Bhagavan’s grace, to absolve us, of
all the errors - in our study of the chapter, including the deficiencies, in
our wrong understanding, of the meanings. We pray, for clarity of
knowledge, and firmness in action.

This is the end, of the 10th chapter, of the Bhagavad Gita sastra:
- Which gives, the essence, of the Upanishads, andexplains about God
- which teaches, the Brahma vidya - or - the Knowledge, of the
Absolute Reality,
- which, also teaches, the Yoga sastra -that brings, maturity to the
mind
- which is, laid out as a divine dialogue, between Sri Krishna and
Arjuna
- which is, titled, “Vibhuti yoga”

My prayerful blessings, and best wishes, to all of you. Hari Om!
