Guide Questions:

1. What is the rising nutritional problem in the Philippines?

ANSWER: Overweight and obesity are prevalent in the country affecting a significant
proportion of children, adolescents and adults. According to the World Health
Organization (WHO), one in three people in the Philippines are obese or overweight
which is evident in the rising trend of diseases of the heart and the vascular system.

2. What are the causes of obesity in the Philippines?

ANSWER: Lifestyle and diet is the primary cause of obesity in the Philippines. Most
Filipinos consume too much of refined sugar and unhealthy foods like those that are
deep fried in oil. Decreased physical activity also contributes to weight gain such as
using of an escalator instead of the stairs. Even some parents nowadays have probably
forgotten to let their children to engage in outdoor games and due to the modern use of
gadgets, children no longer enjoy physical activities.

other nutrition related problems?

Organization for the implementation of tax for sugar-sweetened beverages which was
passed in the lower house and in the senate last January 1, 2018. To address the issue
on childhood obesity, the World Health Organization (WHO) in collaboration with the

action plans for the prevention of overweight and obesity in the Philippines. And on
August 21, 1999 the first week of September of every year was declared as Obesity

different concerns in the prevention and treatment of obesity in the Philippines.

4. What can you contribute to help combat these problems?

ANSWER: I think that as a student, I can help combat obesity by informing others of
how important a well-balanced diet is and to promote doing more physical activity to help
prevent the risk of being overweight. Influencing people to become healthy is the best
thing to do and practicing all the prevention methods to myself could serve as a good
example to inspire others to follow. Through social media platforms, I can advocate and
educate those who are not particular with having a healthy lifestyle to reduce their
chances of acquiring diseases.
