Asks them in their groups to brainstorm where they think the artist is from based on her picture
and her name
Choose 1 representative to give the groups answer

Has them give their answer

Give a drumroll. Gives answer and shows them a map and has a different student get up to come
to the board to see if they can circle where japan

Another drumroll – the teacher circles japan

Shows a picture of japan and asks why Tokyo has a bigger dot than the rest of the dots in the
country
Because it is the capitol

Samarai and arches, but it is also very modern
Shows them older paintings and modern paintings showing that the same mountain is in
each of the pictures
Shows most common art piece – the wave

Shows a video of the artists artwork and how she is a modern contemporary artists, shows more
pictures
Talks about the artists style and how she would use this room if her artwork was in the room

Focuses on pumpkins – doesn’t focus on the traditional orange pumpkin because in japan their
normal pumpkin is green

Gives and describes the project guidelines

Then talked about patterns and what patterns were

Gave picture examples and asked them what patterns they saw
Did this multiple times

Has an new volunteer from each table come up and pick different sections in a piece and then the
class concurrs whether or not the part they chose was a section
Think about the concepts as they look at the artwork

Patterns will always have a repetition and a buddy

Teacher drew an example on the board and had students get out a piece of sketch paper
Showed them how to divide their paper in to 4 sections and how they’re going to make 4
different patterns
