PLATE NO.

1: POWER TRANSMITTED IN AN OPEN BELT DRIVE


Use short bond papers for the plate. Each page should contain your name and student number at
the upper left corner. The problem statement and solution should be hand-written (engineering
lettering). All illustrations and drawings should be drawn manually. Please refer to the rubric at
Module 0 so you will be aware on how the plates will be graded. Please submit your work here

PROBLEM:
An open belt 100mm wide connects two pulleys mounted on parallel shafts with their centers
2.4m apart. The diameter of the larger pulley is 450mm and that of the smaller pulley 300mm.
The coefficient of friction is 0.3 and the maximum stress in the belt is limited to 14N/mm per
width. If the larger pulley rotates at 120 rpm, find the power transmitted.
