Chapter – 05

Ques.01: List out some input devices.

Input device:
1. Keyboard
2. MICR
3. OCR*
4. OMR*
5. Mouse
6. Scanner*
7. Barcode reader***
①Keyboard: A keyboard generally utilize integrated circuits to perform essential
function such as ----------
→ determining binary code
→ to send to the CPU corresponding to each depressed key
→ switching between shifted and non-shifted key
→ repeating a key code
Its arrangement provided as standard on most keyboards is the QWERTY.
②MICR: MICR stands for Magnetic Ink character Recognition was developed by the
Stanford Research Institute of USA for use widely used in the Banking Sector. This system can
read data prerecorded on checks and deposit slips with a ferrite-impregnated ink.
③OMR: OMR stands for Optical Mark Reader optically read marks on carefully printed
form. Optical marks forms are relatively expensive, as they must be printed with exact
tolerances.
Uses: Scoring Examination in educational Institutions.
④OCR: OCR stands for Optical Character Recognition devices can convert data from
source documents to a machine recognizable form. OCR devices generally compare the pattern
read with the patterns of acceptable characters. The read character is assumed to be the
character whose stored pattern must closely matches the read pattern.
Uses: Invoices, Insurance premium notice etc.
Ques.03: Explain Barcode Reader with Figure.
⑤Barcode Reader: Barcode reader is a device for scanning or reading a barcode.
→ A printed code consists of parallel bars of different width and spacing.
→Two types of code used. They are UPC (Universal Product Code) and EAN
(European Article Numbering) code.
→In UPC system – the first five digit numbers identify the suppliers and the next
five are the item numbers within the supplier range of goods.
→In EAN system – the two digit numbers to indicate the country of origin and
the last five digit numbers followed by check digit.
Example: Food and goods are check out in the counter.

Ques.06: Give a short view idea on three types of scanner.

⑥Scanner: Scanner allows a PC to convert a drawing or photograph into a code that a
graphics or desktop program can use to display the image on the screen.
Three basic types of scanner are
 Sheet-fed-Mechanical rollers move the paper past the scan head. The page is
stationary behind a glass window while the head moves past the page.
Flatbed Scanner:
→Requires a series of mirrors to keep the image that is picks up the moving scan
head focused on the longs that feed the image to a bank of serons.
→If there’s any problem in the mirror the image undergoes some degradation.
Hand-held Scanner:
→It is a device of compromising in now a day.
→It can scan pages in books but compromises to the sheet fed and flatbed
scanner for its backdated mechanism.
⑦Mouse: Mouse is a hand-movable device that controls the position of the cursor on a
screen.
→It has a box with buttons on the top and bolls on the buttons.
→Box is placed on a float-surface with the user’s hand over it.
→Balls movement on the surface causes the cursor to the move.

Ques.04: List out some name of output devices.

Output Device:
1. Monitor
2. Printer
Monitor: Commonly used display devices.
→Utilizes a cathode ray tube (CRT)
→CRT monitor generally produces images by the raster-scan method.
→In raster-scan method, an electron beam with varying intercity, is moved back in forth
horizontally across the face of the monitor.
→The screen resolution of a monitor by the number of pixels making up the screen.

Ques.05: Advantage, Disadvantage of LCD Monitor.

Advantages:
→Low power consumption
→Low cost
→Small size
→Color concept is more clear.
Disadvantages:
→LCD do not emit light, as a result, the image is very little contrast.
→Angle viewing is not comfortable
→Less color capability
→Picture tube sometimes gets on difficulty to manage color
→Screen is susceptible to glare, so the optimum viewing angle is narrow.
→Resolution is not as good as that of a CRT.

Ques.02: Compare among MICR, OMR, OCR
