Fill Time for the Transmission Clutch - Calibrate

SMCS - 3155-524-FW

Procedure for Transmission Clutch Fill Calibration

Improper calibration of the transmission clutch fill will cause transmission shifting problems. The
automatic calibration procedure for setting the transmission clutch fill will achieve greater
consistency. The main relief valve must be calibrated. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Transmission
Charging Pump Pressure - Test and Adjust" for information about setting the relief valve.

NOTICE
Do not connect or disconnect hose fittings to or from the quick
disconnect nipples when there is pressure in the system. This will
prevent damage to the seals that are in the fitting.

NOTICE
Care must be taken to ensure that fluids are contained during
performance of inspection, maintenance, testing, adjusting and repair
of the product. Be prepared to collect the fluid with suitable containers
before opening any compartment or disassembling any component
containing fluids.

Refer to Special Publication, NENG2500, "Caterpillar Dealer Service

Tool Catalog" for tools and supplies suitable to collect and contain
fluids on Caterpillar products.

Dispose of all fluids according to local regulations and mandates.

The following conditions must be met before calibration:

z The main relief valve must be calibrated. Refer to Testing and Adjusting, "Transmission
Charging Pump Pressure - Test and Adjust" for information about setting the relief valve.

z The machine speed must be zero.

z The engine must be running.

z The parking brake must be set.

z The implement lockout switch must be in the locked position.

z The transmission filter bypass must not be bypassing.

z The transmission oil temperature must be at an operating temperature of 80° ± 10°C (176° ±
18°F).

z The inching pedal must be fully released in order to allow the automatic calibration function to
start.

z The service brake pedal must be fully released in order to allow the automatic calibration
function to start.

Note: Bumping of the inching pedal or bumping of the service brake pedal during the automatic
calibration function will cause the calibration procedure to be aborted.

Note: If a new modulating valve was installed, start the engine and shift the transmission for at least
12 times into a speed or a direction that uses the new clutch solenoid modulating valve. Refer to
Table 2 in order to identify the clutches that are engaged for each direction and each gear.

Required Tools
Part Number Description Qty
JEBD3003 Caterpillar Electronic Technician (ET) 1
171-4400 Communication Adapter Gp 1
160-0141 Adapter Cable As 1

The Caterpillar Electronic Technician service tool (ET) is used to access the calibration procedures.
A message on the ET screen will give instructions that guide the user through the calibration
procedure. Refer to the Manual that is provided with the ET for more information about ET.

(9) Service connector

1. Connect ET to service connector (9) .

2. Open the software program (ET). Select the transmission ECM for the machine that is being
calibrated.

3. If the conditions that are listed above in Preparation for Calibration Procedure are met, the
display will inform the technician to press NEXT in order to advance to the next step.

Note: During the calibration of the transmission clutch fill, many transmission clutch fills are
occurring. Remain seated. There will be some vibration and noise as the clutches are being
calibrated. If any of the conditions for calibration are violated during the calibration, the
calibration will be stopped. Do not operate the air conditioning or hydraulics during the
calibration of the solenoids. During the automatic calibration function, avoid performing
steering movements.

Note: At any time during the calibration, the user can abort the calibration by pressing the
CANCEL button. Depressing the clutch pedal or depressing the service brake pedal will also
abort the calibration.

4. The ECM will command the engine to run at 1,700 RPM.

16M Motor Grader B9H00001-UP (MACHINE) POWERED BY C13 Engine(SEBP4... Page 7 of 8

Note: The engine must achieve the requested speed in a maximum of five seconds. If the
engine does not reach the requested RPM in the given amount of time, the ECM will abort
calibration due to a incorrect engine speed.

5. The display will continuously display "Calibrating Clutch #8". The ECM will fill clutch 8 and
the ECM will drain clutch 8 several times. The ECM will formulate the optimal hold current
and the optimal ramp levels for the solenoid that operates the modulating valve for clutch 8.
When the ECM has completed calibrating this clutch, ET automatically moves to the next step.

6. The display will continuously display "Calibrating Clutch #7". The ECM will fill clutch 7 and
the ECM will drain clutch 7 several times. The ECM will formulate the optimal hold current
and the optimal ramp levels for the solenoid that operates the modulating valve for clutch 7.
When the ECM has completed calibrating this clutch, ET automatically moves to the next step.

7. The display will continuously display "Calibrating Clutch #6". The ECM will fill clutch 6 and
the ECM will drain clutch 6 several times. The ECM will formulate the optimal hold current
and the optimal ramp levels for the solenoid that operates the modulating valve for clutch 6.
When the ECM has completed calibrating this clutch, ET automatically moves to the next step.

8. The display will continuously display "Calibrating Clutch #5". The ECM will fill clutch 5 and
the ECM will drain clutch 5 several times. The ECM will formulate the optimal hold current
and the optimal ramp levels for the solenoid that operates the modulating valve for clutch 5.
When the ECM has completed calibrating this clutch, ET automatically moves to the next step.

9. The display will continuously display "Calibrating Clutch #4". The ECM will fill clutch 4 and
the ECM will drain clutch 4 several times. The ECM will formulate the optimal hold current
and the optimal ramp levels for the solenoid that operates the modulating valve for clutch 4.
When the ECM has completed calibrating this clutch, ET automatically moves to the next step.

10. The display will continuously display "Calibrating Clutch #3". The ECM will fill clutch 3 and
the ECM will drain clutch 3 several times. The ECM will formulate the optimal hold current
and the optimal ramp levels for the solenoid that operates the modulating valve for clutch 3.
When the ECM has completed calibrating this clutch, ET automatically moves to the next step.

11. The display will continuously display "Calibrating Clutch #2". The ECM will fill clutch 2 and
the ECM will drain clutch 2 several times. The ECM will formulate the optimal hold current
and the optimal ramp levels for the solenoid that operates the modulating valve for clutch 2.
When the ECM has completed calibrating this clutch, ET automatically moves to the next step.

12. The display will continuously display "Calibrating Clutch #1". The ECM will fill clutch 1 and
the ECM will drain clutch 1 several times. The ECM will formulate the optimal hold current
and the optimal ramp levels for the solenoid that operates the modulating valve for clutch 1.
When the ECM has completed calibrating this clutch, ET automatically moves to the next step.

13. The ECM will command the engine to resume normal operations.

14. Once the calibration has been completed successfully, the ECM will write the calibration data
to memory.

15. Operate the machinery in order to check the quality of transmission shift.
