Elements, Compounds and Mixtures

An element is the fundamental substance that consists of only one type of atom.
Elements consist of smaller particles and can be man-made or synthetic. Their
arrangement in the periodic table is based on the number of protons in an increasing
order.

Substances, which are made by the combination of two or more kinds of elements are
called compounds. The atoms in a compound are chemically bonded and hence
cannot be separated easily.

A mixture is a substance made by the physical combination of two or more different

elements or compounds. It can be classified into 6 different categories – homogenous,
heterogeneous, solutions, alloys, suspensions, and colloids.

Draw a smiley face if the statement is true otherwise, draw a sad face if the statement
is wrong and change the underlined word. Write correct word on the space beside the
the faces. If the statement is correct, no need to write the new word.

Statement

It is possible to breakdown the atom

further retaining the properties of the
element.

Elements are made up of only one atom

A heterogeneous mixture is a mixture in

which the composition is not uniform
throughout the mixture

Mixtures have different properties as the

substances making it up.

Examples of common alloys:

Steel, Bronze, Brass

Lothar Meyer compiled a periodic table of 56

elements based on a regular repeating
pattern of physical properties such as molar
volume.

A mixture is a substance made by the

physical combination of two or more different
elements or compounds

All of the elements are naturally occurring
