Not Just for Rhythm: Chords in Lead Lines

By Ben Helson

Not only will Tony Rice use chord substitutions in his rhythm guitar technique, but also in his lead guitar work. If you
incorporate extended chords into your lead lines you'll find your solos pop a lot more than if you used single note lead lines. It's
become a bluegrass staple.

Notice in our playalong example we use all the lead licks as well as the chord substitution idea. Hearing these chords in
context is essential to understanding this concept. Switching from single note lines to chords can be tough, but the reward is
well worth the effort.
