You are on page 1of 1

Nick,

I’m so excited to hear that you’re going to school to become a music teacher. I think that it’s
something really important for you and our family. For you, because you get to do what you
love every single day…and when you love what you do, it’s never work. For our family, I think
it’s important for us to continue what Mor-mor did with her life. She felt that music should be
shared with everyone and that we all have a little bit inside of us.

I know firsthand how powerful music can be for a student in need. I know how it can spark
creativity in the dull and give meaning to everyday life. I hope you have an amazing time
learning about the intricacies of music during your 4 years of college. Don’t worry…you’ll never
know it all. That’s what makes it so fun.

Suggestions for your 4 years as a Music Education Major:

 Take music theory serious. If you understand it inside and out, everything will be much
easier.

 Practice your secondary instruments…but don’t worry so much about memorizing the
fingerings for each note. You’re gunna forget ‘em.

 Enjoy playing in your college ensembles. Chances are…they’ll be the best ensembles
and best music you’ll ever play.

 Go to as many concerts as you possibly can. You’ll get the urge to skip them sometimes,
but your friends are going to be playing some really cool music. Check it out.

 Put together a band with your friends as soon as possible. Play house parties, on-
campus events and bar gigs. Original music is awesome…but don’t forget, everyone
loves a killin’ cover band.

 Become friends with your professors. They love music as much as you and will help you
more than you know…during college and after.

 Have fun… 4 years goes by crazy fast.

See you soon,

Brian
