APPLICATION

Bubble point calculations

Given: Pressure, liquid compositions à Find bubble point temperature

or Temperature, liquid composition à Find bubble point pressure

Requirement:

∑ y = ∑K x = ∑K z
i i i i i = 1. 0

Procedure of calculation:

1. Assume a temperature for the known pressure (or assume pressure if

temperature is known)
2. Find K at pressure and temperature known and assumed

3. Calculate ∑K x i i

4. If ∑K x
i i = 1.0 the assumed temperature or pressure is right. If not,

repeat step 1-3 until ∑K x i i = 1.0

Example:

Determine the bubble point temperature of the mixture shown at 4.0 MPa.

Flash calculation

Given: Pressure, temperature, and the amount of feed and its compositions

à Find the amounts of vapor and liquid, and the compositions of each.

V, yi

F, zi

L, x i
Overall balance: F=V+L

For each component: F zi = L xi + V yi

For convenience, let F = 1 mol, then zi = L xi + V yi

Similarly, we can derive:

Procedure of calculation:

1. Find K at known pressure and temperature

2. Assume V, L, V/L, or L/V

3. Solve flash equation

4. If assumed V or L is satisfied, calculation is complete. If not, repeat

Example:

Determine the analyses and quantities of vapor and liquid for a flash of the

mixture shown at 4.0 MPa and 100 oC.

Determination of Phase

It is often necessarily to determine whether the fluid in a line is all gas, all

liquid or two phase.

zi
1. If ∑K zi i and ∑K are both greater than 1.0 à a two-phase
i

system exists.

2. If ∑K zi i is less than 1.0 à the system is all liquid.

zi
3. If ∑K is less than 1.0 à system is all vapor.
