Professional Dispositions Statement

After viewing the study materials I had to think what my professional disposition should

be. At first I thought it would be easy to quickly list my values, beliefs, and attitudes interacting

with students; however a professional disposition statement has to a have level of uniqueness

tailored to myself as a teacher. I want to be a teacher that can foster cooperation and a growth

mindset. I want to help students achieve new levels of confidence, exceed academic

expectations, and are ready to become productive members of society while maintaining their

unique traits. Throughout the GCU Special Education program I have seen some progress in

myself. Prior to starting the program I was apprehensive cooperating with others unless I had

too. Before this class for my clinical experiences I had work with teachers or paraeducators and

communicated numerous times to help with student activities. Now I am more confident since I

have been going to my Teacher Mentors meetings and seeing my mentor interact with her

colleagues and cooperating on grading assessments, adjusting lesson plans, or coordinating when

they have to co-teach a class. In the “Professional Dispositions Assessment” I did not score high

on collaborating with other teachers; I knew feel I can do better and present myself with more

professionalism. Viewing the GCU video on professional dispositions I realize dressing for

success, being punctual and prepared are aspects I need to continue to focus on. The Model

Code of Ethics can be viewed as a template on what positive professional dispositions should be.

Of course it is a guide on how to be an effective teacher in the classroom. The Model Code of

Ethics is also a guide on how to treat students with respect, embracing students from different
backgrounds, and creating environments that endorsees community, which I as a teacher can

foster cooperation and a growth mindset.
