Badminton

Individual Sport
Each organization is allowed 1 singles and 1 doubles team. A student may compete in both.

Toss

Before play commences, a toss shall be conducted and the side winning the toss shall
exercise the choice in either to serve or receive first or to start play at one end of the court or
the other. The side losing the toss shall then exercise the remaining choice.

Rules

 A player must wait until his opponent is ready before serving. If the opponent attempts
a return then he is ruled having been ready.
 The feet of both players must remain in a stationary position until the serve is made.
Your feet can not be touching the line at this time.
 It is not a fault if you miss the shuttle while serving.
 The shuttle cannot be caught and slung with the racket.
 A player cannot hold his racket near the net to ward off a downward stroke by his
opponent or to interfere with his racket.

Faults

 The shuttle, at the instant of being hit is higher than the server’s waist or the head of
the racket is higher than the servers racket hand.
 The shuttle does not land in the correct service court.
 The server's feet are not in the service court or if the feet of the receiver are not in the
court diagonally opposite the server.
 The server steps forward as he/she serves.
 Any player balking or feinting his opponent before serve or during serve.
 A serve or shot that lands outside the court boundaries, passes under or through the net,
touches any other obstructions or a player’s body or clothing. The boundary and service
lines are considered in play.
 The shuttle in play is struck before it crosses the net to the striker's side of the net. You
may follow through over the net.
 A player touching the net or its supports with his body or racket while the shuttle is in
play.
 Hitting the shuttle twice in succession by a player or team.

Scoring System

o A match consists of the best of 3 games of 21 points unless otherwise arranged.


o Every time there is a serve – there is a point scored.
o The side winning a rally adds a point to its score.
o At 20 all, the side which gains a 2 point lead first, wins that game.
o At 29 all, the side scoring the 30th point, wins that game.
o The side winning a game serves first in the next game.

Interval and Change of Ends

o When the leading score reaches 11 points, players have a 60 second interval
o According to BWF, a 2- minute interval between each game is allowed.
o In the third game, players change ends when the leading score reaches 11 points.
o Players changed ends if it is end of the first game
o Players also changed ends if it is end of the second game.
o If the ends are not changed, it shall be done so as soon as the mistake is discovered and
when the shuttle is not in play, the existing score shall stand.

Singles

o At the beginning of the game (0-0) and when the server’s score is even, the server serves
from the right service court. When the server’s score is odd, the server serves from the
left service court.
o If the server wins a rally, the server scores a point and then serves again from the
alternate service court.
o If the receiver wins a rally, the receiver scores a point and becomes the new server.
They serve from the appropriate service court – left if their score is odd, and right if it
is even.

Doubles

o A side has only one ‘set’.


o The service passes consecutively to the players as shown in the diagram.
o At the beginning of the game and when the score is even, the server serves from the
right service court. When it is odd, the server serves from the left court.
o If the serving side wins a rally, the serving side scores a point and the same server serves
again from the alternate service court.
o If the receiving side wins a rally, the receiving side scores a point. The receiving side
becomes the new serving side.
o The players do not change their respective service courts until they win a point when
their side is serving.

If players commit an error in the service court, the error is corrected when the mistake is
discovered.
In a doubles match between A & B against C & D. A & B won the toss and decided to serve.

Note that this means:


o The order of server depends on the score odd or even same as in singles.
o The service courts are changed by the servicing side only when a point is scored. In all
other cases, the players continue to stay in their respective service court from where
they played previous rally. This shall guarantee alternate server.

Service

In a correct service

a. Neither side shall cause undue delay to the delivery of the service once the
server and the receiver are ready for the service. On the completion of the
backward movement of the server’s racket head, any delay from the start of the
service shall be considered to be undue delay.
b. The server and the receiver shall stand within diagonally opposite to service
court without touching the boundary lines of the service courts.
c. Some parts of both feet of the server and the receiver shall remain in contact
with the surface of the court in a stationary position from the start of the service
until the service is delivered;
d. The service of the racket shall initially hit the base of the shuttle;
e. The whole shuttle shall be below the server’s waist at the instant of the being
hit by the server’s racket. The waist shall be considered to be an imaginary line
round the body, level with the lowest part of the server’s bottom rib;
f. The shaft of the server’s racket at the instant of hitting the shuttle shall be
pointing in a downward direction;
g. The movement of the server’s racket shall continue forwards from the start of
the service until the service is delivered.
h. The flight of the shuttle shall be upwards from the server’s racket to pass over
the net so that, if not intercepted, shall land in the receiver’s service court (i.e.
on or within the boundary lines); and
i. In attempting to serve, the server shall not miss the shuttle;
j. Once the players are ready for service, the first forward movement of the
server’s racket head shall be the start of the service;
k. Once started, the service is delivered when the shuttle is hit by the server’s
racket or, in attempting to serve, the server misses the shuttle;
l. The server shall not serve before the receiver is ready. However, the receiver
shall be considered to have been ready if a return of the service is attempted.
m. In doubles, during the delivery of service, the partners may take up any positions
within their respective courts which do not cover the opposing server or
receiver.

Singles

Serving and receiving courts the players shall serve from and receive in their respective
right service courts when the service is not scored an even number of points in that game:

a. The players shall serve from, and receive in, their respective left service courts when
the server had scored odd number of the points in that game.
b. Order of play and position on court.

In a rally, a shuttle may be hit by the server and the receiver alternately, from any position
on that player’s side of the net, until the shuttle ceases to be in play.

Scoring and serving

a. If the server wins a rally, the server shall score a point. The server shall then
serve again at the alternate service court.
b. If the receiver wins a rally, the receiver shall score a point. The receiver shall
then be the next server.

Doubles
Serving and receiving courts

a. A player of the serving side shall serve from the right service court when the serving
side has not scored or has scored an even number of points in that game.
b. A player of the serving side shall serve from the left service court when the serving side
has scored an odd number of points in that game.
c. The player of the receiving side who served last shall stay in the same service court
from where he served last. The reverse pattern shall apply to the receiver’s partner.
d. The player of the receiving side standing in the diagonally opposite service court to the
server shall be the receiver.
e. The players shall not change their respective service court and they win a point when
their side is serving.
f. Service in any term of serving shall be delivered from the service court corresponding
to the serving side’s score.

Order of play and position on court, after the service is returned, in a rally, a shuttle
may be hit by either player of the serving side or either the player of the receiving side
alternately, from any position on that player’s side of the net, until the shuttle ceases to in play.

Scoring and serving

a. If the scoring side wins a rally, the serving side shall score a point.
b. If the receiving side wins a rally, the receiving side shall score a point. The receiving
side then shall then become the new serving side.

Sequence of serving

In any game, the right to serve shall pass consecutively:

a. From the initial server who started the game from the right service court.
b. To the partner of the initial receiver.
c. To the partner of the initial server.
d. To the initial receiver
e. To the initial server and so on.
No player shall serve or receive out of turn, or receive two consecutive services in the
same game, either player of the winning side may serve first in the next game, and either the
losing side may receive first in the next game.

SERVICE COURT ERRORS

Service court error has been made when a player:

a. Has served or received out of turn, or


b. Has served or received from the wrong service court.

When a “let” occurs, play since the last service shall not count and the player who
served the last shall serve again.
SHUTTLE NOT IN PLAY

A shuttle is in play when: it strikes the net or post and starts to fall towards the surface
of the court on the striker’s side of the net, it hits the surface of the court; or a “fault” or a “let”
has occurred.
