Understanding the self tacles about the identity of the self, that the self should be open
for accepting a lot of process or digesting changes to our thoughts or views . THIS SUBJECT
GIVES AWARENESS TO/OF OUR SELVES PER EXAMPLES, THE LESSONS GIVES ME
AWARENESS TO MY OWN THOUGHTS, FEELINGS, PERSPECTIVE AND
DEVELOPMENT.

It is very knowledgable to know the theories /PERSPECTIVE of these famous philosophers about one’s
self since it is a study of not just our self but also our existence, uhm so that we’ll understand ourselves
better why we behave in that demeanor/attitude/behavior

In general maam the topic is about the understanding of the construction of the self from several
perspectives halimbawa na lng ng philosophy, sociology, and psychology

Philosophical Perspective on Self
Philosophy - Philosophy is derived from the Greek words “ Philos” and “Sophia” which literally means
“Love for Wisdom”. It is the study of acquiring knowledge through rational thinking and inquiries that
involves in answering questions regarding the nature and existence of man and the world we live in. As
such, it is imperative to look into the various explanations from different philosophers their notion
of what the “Self” its nature and how it is formed in order to have a better picture on how
people develop their behaviors, attitude and actions and to be able to identify and understand
who we are and how we came to be.

Philosophy - Employs the inquisitive mind to discover the ultimate causes, reasons, and principles of
everything

 “love of wisdom”

 Desire for truth

*Socrates suggests Know thyself *SELF KNOWLEDGE is a prerequisite to a happy and meaningful life

The Philosophers (have different views regarding the nature of the self)
 Socrates – an unexamined life is not worth living OR the self is an immortal soul
 Plato – the self is an immortal soul
 Aristotle – the soul is the essence of the self.
 St. Augustine – the self has an immortal soul
 Rene Descartes – I think therefore I am
 John Locke – the self is consciousness
 David Hume – there is no self.
 Immanuel Kant – we construct the
self.  Sigmund Freud – the self is
multilayered  Gilbert Ryle – the self is the
way people behave  Paul Churchland – the self is the
brain  Maurice Merleau-Ponty – the self
is embodied subjectivity
