Twenty-Third Sunday after Pentecost

St John the Evangelist

8 November 2020
Confession and Forgiveness

P In the name of the Father, and of the Son, T and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
P Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse
the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily
magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
C Amen.
P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God
who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Kneel/Stand. Silence for reflection and self-examination.

P Most merciful God,

C we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in
thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you
with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your
ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

P Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. As a
called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire
forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, T and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

Entrance Hymn: O Worship the King

1. O worship the King, all-glorious above. 3. This earth, with its store of wonders untold,
O gratefully sing His pow'r and His love; Almighty, Thy pow'r hath founded of old,
Our shield and defender, the Ancient of Days, Established it fast by a changeless decree,
Pavilioned in splendor and girded with praise. And round it hath cast, like a mantle, the sea.

2. O tell of His might, O sing of His grace, 4. Thy bountiful care what tongue can recite?
Whose robe is the light, whose canopy space; It breathes in the air, it shines in the light,
His chariots of wrath the deep thunderclouds form, It streams from the hills, it descends to the
And dark is His path on the wings of the storm. plain,
And sweetly distills in the dew and the rain.

P The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
C And also with you.

Gloria

Glory to God, we give you thanks and praise; of heavenly joy we sing.
We worship you, to you our hearts we raise, Lord God, almighty king.
Lord Jesus Christ, the Father’s only Son, you take our sin away.
O precious Lamb of God, the victory you’ve won, receive our thanks today.
Alone, O Christ, you only are the Lord, at God’s right hand most high:
who, with the Spirit, worshiped and adored, Three-in-One, we glorify.

P The Lord be with you.

C And also with you.

P Let us pray,

P Stir up, O Lord, the wills of your faithful people to seek more eagerly the help you offer, that, at the last,
they may enjoy the fruit of salvation; through our Lord Jesus Christ.
C Amen.
The Readings

The First Reading - Wisdom of Solomon 6:12-16

Wisdom is radiant and unfading,

and she is easily discerned by those who love her,
and is found by those who seek her.
She hastens to make herself known to those who desire her.
One who rises early to seek her will have no difficulty,
for she will be found sitting at the gate.
To fix one’s thought on her is perfect understanding,
and one who is vigilant on her account will soon be free from care,
because she goes about seeking those worthy of her,
and she graciously appears to them in their paths,
and meets them in every thought.

L The word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Psalm 70
A Be pleased, O God, to deliver me. O Lord, make haste to help me!
C Let those be put to shame and confusion who seek my life.
A Let those be turned back and brought to dishonor who desire to hurt me.
C Let those who say, “Aha, Aha!” turn back because of their shame.
A Let all who seek you rejoice and be glad in you.
C Let those who love your salvation say evermore, “God is great!”
A But I am poor and needy; hasten to me, O God!
C You are my help and my deliverer; O Lord, do not delay!

The Second Reading - 1 Thessalonians 4:13-18

But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who have died, so that you may
not grieve as others do who have no hope. For since we believe that Jesus died and rose again, even so,
through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have died. For this we declare to you by the word of the
Lord, that we who are alive, who are left until the coming of the Lord, will by no means precede those who
have died. For the Lord himself, with a cry of command, with the archangel’s call and with the sound of God’s
trumpet, will descend from heaven, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who are left,
will be caught up in the clouds together with them to meet the Lord in the air; and so we will be with the Lord
forever. Therefore encourage one another with these words.

L The word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 25th chapter.

C Glory to you, T O Lord.
The Gospel – Matthew 25:1-13

“Then the kingdom of heaven will be like this. Ten bridesmaids took their lamps and went to meet the
bridegroom. Five of them were foolish, and five were wise. When the foolish took their lamps, they took no oil
with them; but the wise took flasks of oil with their lamps. As the bridegroom was delayed, all of them became
drowsy and slept. But at midnight there was a shout, ‘Look! Here is the bridegroom! Come out to meet him.’
Then all those bridesmaids got up and trimmed their lamps. The foolish said to the wise, ‘Give us some of your
oil, for our lamps are going out.’ But the wise replied, ‘No! there will not be enough for you and for us; you
had better go to the dealers and buy some for yourselves.’ And while they went to buy it, the bridegroom
came, and those who were ready went with him into the wedding banquet; and the door was shut. Later the
other bridesmaids came also, saying, ‘Lord, lord, open to us.’ But he replied, ‘Truly I tell you, I do not know
you.’ Keep awake therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.

P The Gospel of the Lord.

C Praise to you, T O Christ.

Halle-halle-hallelujah,
Halle-halle-hallelujah,

I Heard the Voice of Jesus Say

1. I heard the voice of Jesus say,

"Come unto me and rest;
Lay down, O weary one, lay down
Your head upon my breast."
I came to Jesus as I was,
So weary, worn, and sad;
I found in him a resting place,
And he has made me glad.

2. I heard the voice of Jesus say,

"Behold, I freely give
The living water; thirsty one,
Stoop down, and drink, and live."
I came to Jesus, and I drank
Of that life-giving stream;
My thirst was quenched, my soul revived,
And now I live in him.

3. I heard the voice of Jesus say,

"I am this dark world’s light;
Look unto me, your morn shall rise,
And all your day be bright."
I looked to Jesus, and I found
In him my star, my sun;
And in that light of life I’ll walk
Till trav'ling days are done.

Homily “Ready or Not, Here I Come”

The Apostles’ Creed

C I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, T
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession
P Lord, in your mercy,
C hear our prayer.

Offering Prayer

P Blessed are you, O God, maker of all things.

You have set before us these gifts of your good creation.
Prepare us for your heavenly banquet,
nourish us with this rich food and drink,
and send us forth to set tables in the midst of a suffering world,
through the bread of life, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
C Amen.

A Blessing for Those Joining Virtually

C My Jesus,
I believe that You are present
in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive
You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment
receive You sacramentally,
I am confident
of the perfect righteousness
I have by grace
through your Word.
Never permit me
to be separated from You.
Amen.

Preface

P The Lord be with you.

C And also with you.
P Lift up your hearts.
C We lift them to the Lord.
P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C It is right to give our thanks and praise.

P It is indeed right, our duty and our joy,

that we should at all times and in all places
give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God,
through our Savior Jesus Christ.
By the witness of your saints
you show us the hope of our calling,
and strengthen us to run the race set before us,
that we may delight in your mercy and rejoice with them in glory.
And so, with St. Martin of Tours and St. Mary the Mother of our Lord, T
with the choirs of angels and all the hosts of heaven,
we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the
highest. Blessed T is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Eucharistic Prayer

P God of our weary years, God of our silent tears,

you have brought us this far along the way.
In times of bitterness you did not abandon us,
but guided us into the path of love and light.
In every age you sent prophets
to make known your loving will for all humanity.
The cry of the poor has become your own cry;
our hunger and thirst for justice is your own desire.
In the fullness of time, you sent your chosen servant
to preach good news to the afflicted,
to break bread with the outcast and despised,
and to ransom those in bondage to prejudice and sin.

In the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, T given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,

and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood, T
shed for you and all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup
we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
C Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.

P Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection,

we await the day when Jesus shall return
to free all the earth from the bonds of slavery and death.
Come, Lord Jesus! And let the church say, “Amen!”
C Amen!
P Send your Holy Spirit, our advocate,
to fill the hearts of all who share this bread and cup
with courage and wisdom to pursue love and justice in all the world.
Come, Spirit of freedom! And let the church say, “Amen!”
C Amen!
P Join our prayers and praise with your prophets and martyrs of every age,
that, rejoicing in the hope of the resurrection,
we might live in the freedom and hope of your Son.
Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all glory and honor is yours, almighty Father, now and forever.
C Amen.
Our Father

P Lord, remember us in Your kingdom, and teach us to pray:

C Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen
Lamb of God

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world;

have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world;
have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world;
grant us peace.

P Lord Jesus,
in this simple meal you have set a banquet.
Sustain us on the journey,
strengthen us to care for the least of your beloved children,
and give us glad and generous hearts
as we meet you on the way.
C Amen.

Blessing

P May the God of all creation,

in whose image we are made,
who claims us and calls us beloved,
who strengthens us for service,
give you reason to rejoice and be glad!
The blessing of God,
Sovereign, T Savior, and Spirit,
be with you today and always.
C Amen.
Let Us Talents and Tongues Employ

1. Let us talents and tongues employ, 3. Christ is able to make us one,

reaching out with a shout of joy: at the table he sets the tone,
bread is broken, the wine is poured, teaching people to live to bless,
Christ is spoken and seen and heard. love in word and in deed express. Refrain
.

Refrain 4. Jesus calls us in, sends us out

Jesus lives again, earth can breathe again, bearing fruit in a world of doubt,
pass the Word around: loaves abound! gives us love to tell, bread to share:
Jesus lives again, earth can breathe again, God (Immanuel) ev'rywhere! Refrain
pass the Word around: loaves abound! .

Dismissal

A Go in peace. Remember the poor!
