Twenty-Fourth Sunday after Pentecost

St John the Evangelist

15 November 2020
Confession and Forgiveness

P In the name of the Father, and of the Son, T and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.
P Almighty God, to whom all hearts are open, all desires known, and from whom no secrets are hid: Cleanse
the thoughts of our hearts by the inspiration of your Holy Spirit, that we may perfectly love you and worthily
magnify your holy name, through Jesus Christ our Lord.
C Amen.
P If we say we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us. But if we confess our sins, God
who is faithful and just will forgive our sins and cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

Kneel/Stand. Silence for reflection and self-examination.

P Most merciful God,

C we confess that we are in bondage to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in
thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you
with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ,
have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your
ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen.

P Almighty God, in his mercy, has given his Son to die for us and, for his sake, forgives us all our sins. As a
called and ordained minister of the Church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire
forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the Father, and of the Son, T and of the Holy Spirit.
C Amen.

Entrance Hymn: The Church's One Foundation

1 The Church’s one foundation is Jesus Christ, her Lord; 3 Though with a scornful wonder the world sees her
She is His new creation by water and the Word. oppressed,
From heav'n He came and sought her to be His holy By schisms rent asunder, by heresies distressed,
bride; Yet saints their watch are keeping; their cry goes up,
With His own blood He bought her, and for her life He “How long?”
died. And soon the night of weeping shall be the morn of song.
.
2 Elect from ev'ry nation, yet one o’er all the earth; 4 Through toil and tribulation and tumult of her war
Her charter of salvation: one Lord, one faith, one birth. She waits the consummation of peace forevermore
One holy name she blesses, partakes one holy food, Till with the vision glorious her longing eyes are blest,
And to one hope she presses with ev'ry grace endued. And the great Church victorious shall be the Church at
rest.

P The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all.
C And also with you.

Gloria

Glory to God, we give you thanks and praise; of heavenly joy we sing.
We worship you, to you our hearts we raise, Lord God, almighty king.
Lord Jesus Christ, the Father’s only Son, you take our sin away.

who, with the Spirit, worshiped and adored, Three-in-One, we glorify.

P The Lord be with you.

C And also with you.

P Let us pray,

P Lord God, so rule and govern our hearts and minds by your Holy Spirit that, always keeping in mind the end
of all things and the day of judgment, we may be stirred up to holiness of life here and may live with you
forever in the world to come, through your Son, Jesus Christ our Lord.
C Amen.
The Readings

The First Reading - Judges 4:1-7

The Israelites again did what was evil in the sight of the Lord, after Ehud died. So the Lord sold them into the
hand of King Jabin of Canaan, who reigned in Hazor; the commander of his army was Sisera, who lived in
Harosheth-ha-goiim. Then the Israelites cried out to the Lord for help; for he had nine hundred chariots of
iron, and had oppressed the Israelites cruelly twenty years.

At that time Deborah, a prophetess, wife of Lappidoth, was judging Israel. She used to sit under the palm of
Deborah between Ramah and Bethel in the hill country of Ephraim; and the Israelites came up to her for
judgment. She sent and summoned Barak son of Abinoam from Kedesh in Naphtali, and said to him, “The
Lord, the God of Israel, commands you, ‘Go, take position at Mount Tabor, bringing ten thousand from the
tribe of Naphtali and the tribe of Zebulun. I will draw out Sisera, the general of Jabin’s army, to meet you by
the Wadi Kishon with his chariots and his troops; and I will give him into your hand.’”

L The word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.
Psalm 123

P To you I lift up my eyes, O you who are enthroned in the heavens!

C As the eyes of servants look to the hand of their master,
P as the eyes of a maid to the hand of her mistress,
C so our eyes look to the Lord our God, until he has mercy upon us.
P Have mercy upon us, O Lord, have mercy upon us,
C for we have had more than enough of contempt.
P Our soul has had more than its fill
C of the scorn of those who are at ease, of the contempt of the proud.

The Second Reading - 1 Thessalonians 5:1-11

Now concerning the times and the seasons, brothers and sisters, you do not need to have anything written to
you. For you yourselves know very well that the day of the Lord will come like a thief in the night. When they
say, “There is peace and security,” then sudden destruction will come upon them, as labor pains come upon a
pregnant woman, and there will be no escape! But you, beloved, are not in darkness, for that day to surprise
you like a thief; for you are all children of light and children of the day; we are not of the night or of darkness.
So then let us not fall asleep as others do, but let us keep awake and be sober; for those who sleep sleep at
night, and those who are drunk get drunk at night. But since we belong to the day, let us be sober, and put on
the breastplate of faith and love, and for a helmet the hope of salvation. For God has destined us not for
wrath but for obtaining salvation through our Lord Jesus Christ, who died for us, so that whether we are
awake or asleep we may live with him. Therefore encourage one another and build up each other, as indeed
you are doing.

L The word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Matthew, the 25th chapter.
C Glory to you, T O Lord.

The Gospel – Matthew 25:14-30

“For it will be like a man going on a journey, who called his servants and entrusted to them his property. To
one he gave five talents, to another two, to another one, to each according to his ability. Then he went
away. He who had received the five talents went at once and traded with them, and he made five talents
more. So also he who had the two talents made two talents more. But he who had received the one talent
went and dug in the ground and hid his master's money. Now after a long time the master of those servants
came and settled accounts with them. And he who had received the five talents came forward, bringing five
talents more, saying, ‘Master, you delivered to me five talents; here, I have made five talents more.’ His
master said to him, ‘Well done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you
over much. Enter into the joy of your master.’ And he also who had the two talents came forward, saying,
‘Master, you delivered to me two talents; here, I have made two talents more.’ His master said to him, ‘Well
done, good and faithful servant. You have been faithful over a little; I will set you over much. Enter into the joy
of your master.’ He also who had received the one talent came forward, saying, ‘Master, I knew you to be a
hard man, reaping where you did not sow, and gathering where you scattered no seed, so I was afraid, and I
went and hid your talent in the ground. Here, you have what is yours.’ But his master answered him,
‘You wicked and slothful servant! You knew that I reap where I have not sown and gather where I scattered no
seed? Then you ought to have invested my money with the bankers, and at my coming I should have received
what was my own with interest. So take the talent from him and give it to him who has the ten talents. For to
everyone who has will more be given, and he will have an abundance. But from the one who has not, even
what he has will be taken away. And cast the worthless servant into the outer darkness. In that place there will
be weeping and gnashing of teeth.’

P The Gospel of the Lord.

C Praise to you, T O Christ.

Halle-halle-hallelujah,

Homily

The Apostles’ Creed

C I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

I believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit,
born of the virgin Mary,
suffered under Pontius Pilate,
was crucified, died, and was buried;
he descended into hell.
On the third day he rose again;
he ascended into heaven,
and is seated at the right hand of the Father,
and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church,
the communion of saints,
the forgiveness of sins,
the resurrection of the body, T
and the life everlasting. Amen.

Prayers of Intercession
P Lord, in your mercy,
C hear our prayer.
Offering Prayer

P Blessed are you, O God, maker of all things.

You have set before us these gifts of your good creation.
Prepare us for your heavenly banquet,
nourish us with this rich food and drink,
and send us forth to set tables in the midst of a suffering world,
through the bread of life, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord.
C Amen.

A Blessing for Those Joining Virtually

C My Jesus,
I believe that You are present
in the Most Holy Sacrament.
I love You above all things,
and I desire to receive
You into my soul.
Since I cannot at this moment
receive You sacramentally,
I am confident
of the perfect righteousness
I have by grace
through your Word.
Never permit me
to be separated from You.
Amen.

Preface

P The Lord be with you.

C And also with you.
P Lift up your hearts.
C We lift them to the Lord.
P Let us give thanks to the Lord our God.
C It is right to give our thanks and praise.

P It is indeed right, our duty and our joy,

that we should at all times and in all places
give thanks and praise to you, almighty and merciful God,
through our Savior Jesus Christ.
By the witness of your saints
you show us the hope of our calling,
and strengthen us to run the race set before us,
that we may delight in your mercy and rejoice with them in glory.
And so, with St. Elizabeth of Hungary and St. Mary the Mother of our Lord, T
with the choirs of angels and all the hosts of heaven,
we praise your name and join their unending hymn:

Sanctus

Holy, holy, holy Lord, God of power and might, heaven and earth are full of your glory. Hosanna in the
highest. Blessed T is he who comes in the name of the Lord. Hosanna in the highest.

Eucharistic Prayer

P God of our weary years, God of our silent tears,

you have brought us this far along the way.
In times of bitterness you did not abandon us,
but guided us into the path of love and light.
In every age you sent prophets
to make known your loving will for all humanity.
The cry of the poor has become your own cry;
our hunger and thirst for justice is your own desire.
In the fullness of time, you sent your chosen servant
to preach good news to the afflicted,
to break bread with the outcast and despised,
and to ransom those in bondage to prejudice and sin.

In the night in which he was betrayed,

our Lord Jesus took bread, and gave thanks;
broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying:
Take and eat; this is my body, T given for you.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

Again, after supper, he took the cup, gave thanks,

and gave it for all to drink, saying:
This cup is the new covenant in my blood, T
shed for you and all people for the forgiveness of sin.
Do this for the remembrance of me.

For as often as we eat of this bread and drink from this cup
we proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
C Christ has died.
Christ is risen.
Christ will come again.

P Remembering, therefore, his death and resurrection,

we await the day when Jesus shall return
to free all the earth from the bonds of slavery and death.
Come, Lord Jesus! And let the church say, “Amen!”
C Amen!
P Send your Holy Spirit, our advocate,
to fill the hearts of all who share this bread and cup
with courage and wisdom to pursue love and justice in all the world.
Come, Spirit of freedom! And let the church say, “Amen!”
C Amen!
P Join our prayers and praise with your prophets and martyrs of every age,
that, rejoicing in the hope of the resurrection,
we might live in the freedom and hope of your Son.
Through him, with him, in him, in the unity of the Holy Spirit,
all glory and honor is yours, almighty Father, now and forever.
C Amen.
Our Father

P Lord, remember us in Your kingdom, and teach us to pray:

C Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread;
and forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us;
and lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
forever and ever. Amen
Lamb of God

Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world;

have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world;
have mercy on us.
Lamb of God, you take away the sin of the world;
grant us peace.

P Lord Jesus,
in this simple meal you have set a banquet.
Sustain us on the journey,
strengthen us to care for the least of your beloved children,
and give us glad and generous hearts
as we meet you on the way.
C Amen.
Blessing

P May the God of all creation,

in whose image we are made,
who claims us and calls us beloved,
who strengthens us for service,
give you reason to rejoice and be glad!
The blessing of God,
Sovereign, T Savior, and Spirit,
be with you today and always.
C Amen.
