MIDTERM EXAMINATION IN CES 2 (Transportation Engineering)

1 – 10. Remember.
Discuss the roles of transportation planning and engineering in economic
development, quality of life, social equity, public health and ecological
sustainability.
Ans: The goal is to have an efficient flow of transportation for the people and goods
around the world.
If more goods can be accessed thought transport, the more increase of profit in a
country’s wealth which means more taxes which means we can build more
infrastructure for the development of the country.
Developed country can live a lot of easier since the access of goods is easier than
undeveloped country.
Better transportation also means affordable goods which means all people can
achieve social equity.
If the remote place is accessible, the benefits includes access to education,
service, employment which means better public health.
Organized public transportation means it decrease the needs for constructing more
transportation infrastructure and making new vehicle which is simila
11 – 30. Understand.
Describe completely the transportation system in the Philippines. Provide
engineering solutions for each in order to improve the system.
Ans: Basic transportation system in the Philippines relies on short distance travel such
as jeepney (iconic transport vehicle) and rickshaw. Since the Philippines is a
developing country, it normalized the use of railroad in urban cities (such as
Manila).
The Philippines is famous for its poor-quality road and traffic congestion.
The solution for poor quality road is a better budget for this project and longer
warranty so that we can avoid swindlers.
For traffic congestion, a similar scheme from Singapore which is the restraining
of car ownership called “Vehicle Quota System” which is the auctioning cars.

31 – 50. Analyze.
What are the four principal modes for moving freight? Explain which of these
modes carries the largest and lowest share of ton-kilometers?
Highway, Railroad, Water and Pipeline Transportation.
Water transportation can carry a lot of freights per kilometer and the vehicle used
on this mode uses less fuel than any other transportation.

51 – 70. Apply.
A study area consists of four zones (A, B, C, and D). An O-D survey indicates
that the number of trips between each zone is as shown in Table A. Planning
estimates for the area indicate that in five years the number of trips in each zone
will increase by the growth factor shown in Table B and that trip generation will
be increased to the amounts shown in the last column of the table.
Table A

A -- 300 200 200
B 300 -- 300 --
C 200 300 -- 300
D 200 -- 300 --

B 600 1.2 720
C 800 1.4 1120
D 500 1.4 700
Determine the number of trips between each zone for future condition.
