Printing Technologies

• Conventional/Impact
– Fixed master (plate/cylinder)
1. Letterpress & Flexography

Direct
2. Gravure
3. Stencil/Screen Printing
4. Offset Lithography Indirect/Offset

• Digital/Non-Impact
– No fixed master
– Variable data printing
1. Electrophotography
2. Inkjet
3. Thermal
4. Laser

2
Choice of Printing Method

• Choice of printing method is often based on:

– End use: paper (universal), glass, metal, plastic (coating often
required that allows the ink to adhere)
– Quality
– Number of copies
– Costs
– Size of print
– Deadline
– Availability of printing machine
– Binding and post press operations

Print run
• In case of less prints, Digital Printing is often used and more affordable
(for e.g. posters).
• Gravure is most expensive - initial cost of cylinder production, higher quality
• In India, Gravure printing is most popular, Flexo in USA

Conventional Printing Technologies

• Relief: Letterpress (plate) & Flexography (flexible plate on

cylinder) – print areas above the non-print areas
• Intaglio: Gravure (plate)/rotogravure (cylinder) – print areas
below the non-print areas
• Planographic: Offset Lithography (plate, cylinder) – print and
non-print areas are on the same surface
• Porous: Screen printing – print areas are on fine mesh screen

Letterpress

• Oldest printing processes and is

relatively obsolete
• A letterpress works much like a
sophisticated rubber stamp
• A raised surface takes ink and
transfers directly to paper
• One or two colours, thick layer of
ink
• Non-readable text on plate and
readable text on paper
• The raised image area is inked by
large rollers and the ink is then
transferred directly to the paper
sheet (sheet fed).
