SCENARIO:
Carl Shapiro, who was diagnosed with hypertension and hyperlipidimia during a
routine visit to his primary provider. He arrives in the ED with a blood pressure of
210/110. The nurse discovers that he stopped his antihypertensive medication due to
erectile dysfunction. How does the nurse maintain patient privacy in the ED during
discussion of personal issues? What topics should be included in an individualized
discharge plan to address his emotional concerns, educational needs, and continuity of
care when the nurse receives orders for an ACE inhibitor, Captoril ( Capoten), and
discharge home?

Learn to measure your own blood pressure. Keep a record of your results. Ask
your doctor which readings mean that you need medical attention.
Take your blood pressure medicine exactly as directed. Don't skip doses. Missing
doses can cause your blood pressure to get out of control.
If you do miss a dose (or doses) check with your healthcare provider about what
to do.
Control your stress. Learn ways to manage stress.

Stay at a healthy weight. Get help to lose any extra pounds (kilograms). .
Cut back on salt.
Limit canned, dried, packaged, and fast foods.
Don't add salt to your food at the table.
Season foods with herbs instead of salt when you cook.
Request no added salt when you go to a restaurant.
Eat food rich in potassium.
Break the smoking habit.
Limit drinks that contain caffeine such as coffee, black or green tea, and cola to 2
per day.
Limit alcohol to no more than 2 drinks a day
