Department of Education, who meets the following criteria is eligible to apply
for the Siargao National Science High School Admission Test. He / She must:
1. belong to the upper 10% of the batch and does not have a grade below 80 as
certified by the School Principal. If the applicant does not belong to the upper
10%, he/she should have special aptitude in Science and Math as evidenced by
the report card, with at least a final grade of 85 in Science and Math and 80 in
all other subjects;
2. be in good health and fit to undergo a rigorous academic program; and
3. be of good conduct and behavior.

 ENROLMENT REQUIREMENTS

2. Two (2) identical recent 2 x 2 ID pictures
3. Copy of report card (Form 137E)
4. Xerox copy of the NSO authenticated Live Birth
5. Certificate of Good Moral
Any student who failed to take the Selection Test and enrolled under
the regular curriculum and with good grades may transfer to the SSC in the
Grade 8 provided he/she will take all the subjects under the SSC curriculum.
Students enrolled in the SSC from one STE HS may transfer to another
STE HS subject to the approval of the principal and of the receiving school.
Students from the public and private schools applying for entry to the
SSC will be considered provided that:

1. The student meets the grade requirement in the SSC.

2. He takes the back subjects, i.e. subjects offered under the SSC
curriculum, which are not included in the regular curriculum.
3. He/ She meets all the requirements for SSC.
An equal number of drop outs in the SSC may be replaced with
students from the regular classes as long as they meet the requirements of the
SSC. Replacement of drop outs shall be made at the beginning of the school
year.
RETENTION

A student in the SSC must maintain a general average of 83% and shall
have no final grade lower than 80% in any subject area. Major subjects
(English, Science, Math & Research) shall have 85% final average, while minor
subjects (Filipino, Aral. Pan. MAPEH) shall not have a final average lower than
83%.

If a student gets a final average that is below 85 but is not lower than
83 in any major subject; or below 83 but is not lower than 80 in any minor
subject, the student will still be accepted in the SSC class for the next year on a
conditional (provisionary) status. However, if that same student will still get a
final average that is below the target average by the next school year, the
student will have to transfer to another school.

A student is only allowed to be in a provisionary status once. A line of

seven grade in any subject in any grading period would mean transfer to
another school the next school year.

ASSESSMENT
Classroom Assessment is an integral part of curriculum
implementation. It allows the teachers to track and measure learners’ progress
and to adjust instructions accordingly. Classroom assessment informs the
learners, as well as their parents and guardians, of their progress.

Effective School Year (SY) 2015-2016, the Policy Guidelines on

Classroom Assessment for the K to 12 Basic Education Program shall be
implemented in public elementary and secondary schools nationwide.

GRADING SYSTEM

The k to 12 Basic Education Program uses a standard and competency

–based grading system. These are found in the curriculum guides. All grades
will be based on the weighted raw score of the learners’ summative
assessments. The minimum grade needed to pass a specific learning area is 60,
which is transmuted to 75 in the report card. The lowest mark that can appear
on the report card is 60 for Quarterly Grades and Final Grades.

For these guidelines, the Department will use a floor grade considered
as the lowest possible grade that will appear in the learner’s report card.

Learners from grades 7 to 12 are graded on Written Work, Performance

Tasks, and Quarterly Assessment every quarter. These three are given specific
percentage weights that vary according to the nature of the learning area.

In a grading period, there is one Quarterly Assessment but there should

be instances for students to produce Written Work and to demonstrate what
they know and can do through Performance Tasks. There is no required number
of Written Work and performance Tasks, but these must be spread out over the
quarter and used to assess learners’ skills after each unit has been taught.

The following are the steps in computing for the Final Grades.
Step 1. Grades from all student work are added up. This results in the total
score for each component, namely Written Work, Performance Tasks, and
Quarterly Assessment.

Raw scores from each component have to be converted to a percentage Score.

This is to ensure that values are parallel to each other.

Step 2. The sum of each component is converted to the Percentage Score. To

compute the Percentage Score (PS), divide the raw score by the highest
possible score then multiply the quotient by 100%. This is shown below:

Learner’s total raw score

PERCENTAGE SCORE (PS) = Highest possible score = 100%

Step 3. Percentage scores are then converted to Weighted Scores to show the
importance of each component in promoting learning in the different subjects.

To do this, the percentage Score is multiplied by the weight of the component

found in Table 4 for Grades 7 to 10 and Table 5 for Senior High School. The
product is known as the Weighted Score (WS).
Weighted Score (WS) = Percentage Score x Weight of Component
Table 4. Weight of the Components for grades 7-10

Written Work 30% 40% 20%

Performance

Tasks 50% 40% 60%

Quarterly
10 Assessment 20% 20% 20%

Step 4. The sum of the Weighted Scores in each component is the Initial Grade.
This Initial grade will be transmuted using the given transmutation table (see
Appendix B) to get the Quarterly Grade (QG).
Step 4. The Quarterly grade for each learning area is written in the report card
for the student.

HISTORY
Siargao National Science High School is the first Science High School
in the Division of Siargao. It opened last school year (2009 – 2010) to first year
students only. It was created under Republic Act No. 9651 which was approved
last July 07, 2009. The RA was sponsored by Congressman Francisco T.
Matugas of the First District of Surigao del Norte. The school was legislated
and started its operation on June, 2009.

Siargao National Science High School is in its 7th year of operation. It

opened last school year 2009 – 2010 to one first year class with only 36
students.

The school has already produced three batches of graduates. The

pioneer students graduated last March 2013, the second batch of graduates on
March 2014 and the third batch on March 29, 2015.

This school year, there are four existing classes; one Grade 7 class with
37 students, one Grade 8 class with 36 students, one Grade 9 class with 32
students and one Grade 10 class with 18 students.

SNSHS offers education that emphasizes Science and Mathematics.

From grades 7 to 10, major subjects are recited one hour every day, while
minor are recited 40 minutes daily.

The school caters to a select group of students who passed the

qualifying examination. To be able to take the qualifying examination, they
need to have a general average of 85 and above with no line of seven grade
from first to fourth grading in Grade VI. They also have to undergo interview
which is done at SNSHS campus.

SNSHS strongly supports the students in their conduct of Science

Investigatory Project. Students from Grade 7 to Grade 10 are encouraged to
have SIP, be it individual or group. At present, there are eight SIPs that are
being conducted by the Grade 10 students. The Grade 9 and Grade 8 students
are also actively planning of new SIPs to make since they have been winners in
the past Division SIP competitions. Stakeholders are keenly supporting the
conduct of the SIPs through financial help.

The school also taps the help of other stakeholders and different
government agencies like the Department of Agriculture, Bureau of Fisheries
and Aquatic Resources for some ideas, brochures and professional help; the
local government unit of Dapa headed by Mayor Ruaya for the transportation;
the Department of Environment and Natural Resources for the advise and
permit; the PAMB group for the permission; and the Regional Mobile Group
and PNP Dapa unit for security during the out of town trips while conducting
the studies.

The school is fully implementing the National English Proficiency

Program (NEPP). Students and teachers are required to speak the English
language in the classrooms and in the school campus. They are only allowed to
speak Filipino during the conduct of their Filipino recited subjects.

To promote the practice of honesty in school, for the first two years of
its opening, a very small canteen was placed beside a library without an in
charge. Students went there during recess time, get the food stuff available and
placed their payment in the box. It worked well. The little store brought little
income to the school and at the same time made students responsible of their
actions. However the school’s population gets a little bigger, so a bigger
canteen is now open for the students. The school is still practicing the no
salesgirl policy. Students get the food stuff they like and give their payment to
the lone canteen in charge. To further encourage the practice of honesty,
students who will return money and other stuffs that are found are given
certificates of recognition during convocation time.

Cell phones are collected after the flag ceremony and deposited in the
principal’s office. Students are allowed to use the cell phones on special
conditions and can only get it after class hours.
In six school years (SY) of implementation, the school is slowly
starting to gain recognition, especially in the academic field. SNSHS is a two-
time over all Champion in the Division Science Fair, two –time over –all
Champion in Division Schools Press Conference and two- time over-all First
Runner Up in Division Math Competition. The school was also declared over-
all Champion in two consecutive Division Girl Gatherings and dominated the
Division SIP competition for three consecutive years. SNSHS has produced
Champions in different competitions such us: Provincial Extemporaneous
Speaking in 2013, Provincial Pop Com Essay Writing Contest in 2013, etc. The
school also won second place in the Caraga Regional MuSeaka Competition
sponsored by BFAR.

The school has also produced District and Division winners in special
competitions for celebrations like Nutrition Month, Buwan ng Wika, and other
competitions like: Statistics Quiz, Environment Dance Competition, MTAP,
Parliamentary Procedure Contest, Minutes Writing and many others.

SNSHS has produced major winners in the Regional Level Tilts like
the Regional Schools Press Conference. Since its existence, SNSHS has
produced yearly qualifier(s) to the National Schools Press Conference, and to
top it all, has produced two winners in the National Level – an award for
Photojournalism in NSPC 2011 and for News Writing English in NSPC 2014.
The most recent national award gathered by the school was the 4 th place in
Physics on February 2015.

At present, the school is continuously working hard to improve the

performance of the students. New students are being honed to become active
learners, good leaders and healthy competitors.

Because there were no permanent teachers when SNSHS started, there

have been many borrowed teachers who have taught in school since its
operation. They stayed in school for a year, sometimes two years and one has
stayed in school for three years already. Also, there have been a number of
Provincial School Board teachers who taught every year. It’s almost like a new
set of teachers every school year for the past six years.

At present, there are already six teachers included in the plantilla of the
school. Five of them are Teacher I and one is an MT I who is at present actually
teaching in another school. In exchange of that teacher, a Teacher I from that
school is teaching at SNSHS. There is another one borrowed teacher from a
neighbor school who handles four subjects to complete the workforce of the
school. The seven of them all work together to cater to the needs of the students
every school year. The school has no principal item yet. The principal who acts
as school head since the operation of the school is occupying an elementary
item.

Since the school is open to all smart students who would qualify in the
examination, the school offers a dormitory (for free) to the students coming
from other places in Siargao Island. At present, 18 girls and 10 boys are staying
at the school dormitory. They come to the dorm on Sunday afternoon or early
of Monday morning, and they will go home to their respective places on Friday
afternoon or Saturday morning.

From zero property at the start of operation, now the school is starting
to own buildings, equipment, Science apparatuses, armchairs, teachers’ tables
& chairs and has started to build the perimeter fence. There are still many
things that the school needs but what the school have at present is more than
what we have dreamed to happen when the school opened for the first batch of
first year students last school year 2009 - 2010.

Available school facilities include: 12 classrooms, 240 armchairs, six

sets of teacher’s table and chair, eight green boards, 10 laboratory tables, 60
laboratory stools, two CRs for males, two CRs for females, three CRs for
teachers, three WATSANs, and 60 computer units.

Siargao National Science High School
Thy wisdom and pursuit we all adore

Symbol of hope, vigor and fame
Enlighten minds, performance’ tame
Mentors direct beloved’s cream

In any path that we might tread
We’ll strive for truth and goals heedless of dread
Remain steadfast with standards heed
Calling to mind thy alma mater’s creed

Repeat Chorus

With due respect we all affirm
Our high esteem and wonder firm
To distant places we be brought by dreams
Stand for ethics thou Alma Mater sings

Repeat Chorus

Our island’s pride, a dream come true
Exciting feat of leaders too
Unlocked trials enthralled by youths
Delighted ways for life that soothes
