A Trip to Tuaran

At the last society meeting, it was decided that our English Language Society made a trip to
Tuaran in July.
Two teachers accompanied us on the trip; Mr Charles Ungkim and Miss Wong Sie Jan. 30
members went in one chartered bus.
The objectives of the trip were, first, to give an opportunity to the members to enjoy themselves
after six months of hard work, and secondly, to be an educational trip.
Our first stop on the trip was the Sunday Market or the Tuaran ‘Tamu’. Our members really
enjoyed themselves. Harvest of produce from nearby villages and valleys are brought to the market,
such as fruits, vegetables, handicrafts, fish and homemade traditional cakes. The members bought a lot
of delicious food. They also took photographs of interesting scenes in the ‘tamu’.
The second place we visited was the Tuaran Crocodile Farm. The farm houses 5000 crocodiles
and other animals as well. We watched a crocodile show which made us on the edge of our seats as
the performers get up close with the giant crocodile there. Although the show only lasted about 15
minutes, we were kept excited throughout the whole show.
The last place we visited was the Tuaran Upside-down House. This is truly a unique house.
This house is the first of its kind in South East Asia. Everything inside the house, from furniture to
household appliances, hover above our head, as the ceiling is actually the floor. After viewing the
house, we treated ourselves to some afternoon snacks at the café and picked up some souvenirs too.
Towards evening all of us headed for home.

Part II
Suggested Answer:
The novel that I have studied is ‘Around the World in 80 Days’. The writer is Jules Verne. The
story is about a wealthy Englishman named Phileas Fogg who accepts a wager to travel around the
world in 80 days with his butler, Jean Passepartout. The event that makes me unhappy in the novel is
when Passepartout went missing.
This incident was when Detective Fix invited Passepartout for a meal at a restaurant. At that
time, Detective Fix informed Passepartout that Phileas was a bank robber. However, Passepartout did
not believe him.
As Passepartout got up to leave, someone knocked him out with a blow on his head. The
detective then left Passepartout in the restaurant, hoping that Phileas will miss the steamer, the
Carnatic and he actually did.
The next day, Phileas tried to find Passepartout but failed as Passepartout was already on the
Carnatic sailing to Japan. Passepartout did not have any money with him and he was alone. The next
morning in Japan, he was very hungry.
This incident is a very sad one as Passepartout is separated from his employer, Fogg. I feel
unhappy that he was deceived by Detective Fix and left stranded to fend for himself.

C6 – The larger a city is, the greater choice it offers.
C7 – There are opportunities for jobs.
C8 – There are also more entertainments and more facilities like better roads, electricity, education and

Suggested Answer:
There are advantages and disadvantages of living in the city. The city is usually overcrowded
and they do not know their neighbours because there are too busy with their own work. Crimes and
drug addicts are common. However, in a city we have better choices. There are job opportunities, more
entertainments, and more facilities like roads, electricity and education.
