“My opinion about the reaction or opinion that English lessons will be abolished
by minister”

In my opinion about the abolition of English subjects for junior and senior high school /
vocational school level by the new Indonesian minister Nadiem Makarim is still not appropriate,
because as we know that English is an international language which is very important after our
national language is the language Indonesia. And in Indonesia alone it cannot be avoided,
therefore junior high and high school / vocational schools must be able to begin to understand
English because they need it later for example such as a national exam, where one of the subjects
there is English. How they want to do English problems while they are not smart and proficient
in English. They still have a lot to learn more about English at junior high school or at the next
level.

And also what about the fate of English teachers or prospective English teachers who have 4
years they have deepened the science of English which of course will be used and applied to
students. There should also be a solution for thousands of English teachers who will no longer
teach due to the discourse and prospective English teachers who will be confused about what to
do because the land they take will be abolished. Of course, there must be further policies. If you
think about it, Indonesian citizens will add many more people who are unemployed because of
the jobs they can not have and if there are any, they certainly have the skills in speaking English.
English literature is very influential in competition with other citizens in the future.

In my opinion, steps to erase English lessons for junior high and high school / vocational school
level and to replace them when elementary school is difficult to complete, because it seems like
this is not a solution, but rather adds to the existing problems. As I read in a news report, IGI
(Indonesian Teachers Association) stated that English lessons wanted to be abolished because
they should have been completed in elementary school, and were more focused on conversations
rather than grammar. In my opinion, if this lesson is completed when elementary school seems to
be very difficult for students to follow and understand it. Because when elementary school the
contents of their brain or mind is not yet ripe and it is difficult for them to understand something
especially in the field of English, what they think is only fun for them. Even if it can be done but
still it is very difficult for elementary school students. From my own experience until now it can
not be said to be fluent in English, even though I have passed the lessons from elementary, junior
high, high school / vocational level, and I even learn by following English lessons outside of
school, and learning English is not that simple.

When I was in elementary school, I worked on the problem without knowing what I was doing.
So that I do not really understand what English is. Even tenses were difficult for me to
distinguish when middle school and high school / vocational school. Why did it happen? due to a
lack of time in lessons. Subjects such as MTK, IPA, Indonesian are more than 1x but English
which is also included in the national exam only is given 1x a week. And also this is an obstacle.
In my experience when I was in middle school and high school / vocational high school, there
were still too many of my friends who still did not understand using good and correct English,
even they had difficulty speaking English because there was no habit of speaking English.
Maybe for a simple conversation, it could be, but the grammar is still messy and also
stammering.

Learning English is actually not only learning the language itself, but when we talk to strangers
using English, we also automatically learn their culture. And the current system of learning
English is still not enough for me, because English lessons in high school / vocational school
might have had to listen more (Listening) or speak (Speaking) because in my opinion it will be
easier to talk after we repeat what that we listen to, and at the elementary and junior high schools
are more focused on grammar and writing, so at the high school / vocational level, students can
already speak better and understand grammar. Didn't we already learn English from elementary,
junior high, high school / vocational level and even then it was still lacking, we even had to take
English lessons or courses outside of school, what else if written off from junior high and high
school / vocational school and only completed in elementary school, not yet again the burden of
other lessons that must be learned at the elementary level. I think that's all my opinion, everyone
must have differences of opinion, expressing that opinion is very important because it can be a
consideration in order to advance the nation.
