ENGLISH DAILY TEST

A. Read the letter below and Identify its generic structure !

Dear Sir,

We are writing to complain about ads on TV. There are so many ads, especially during our favourite programs. We think
they should be stopped for a number of reasons.

First, ads are nuisance. They go for a long time and there are so many. Sometimes there seems to be more ads than
programs.

Second, ads are a bad influence on people. They try to encourage people to buy unhealthy food like beer, soft drink,
candy, and chips. And they make people want things they do not really need and cannot afford.

Finally, the people who make ads have too much say in what programs people watch. That is because they want to pull
all their ads on popular programs that a lot of people watch. Some programs which are not so popular get stopped because they
do not attract enough ads, even though those programs may be someone’s favourite.

For those reasons, we think your TV station should stop showing ads. They interrupt programs, are a bad influence on
people, and sometimes put a stop to people’s favourite shows. We are sick of ads, and now we mostly watch channel 2 ( ABC ).

Yours faithfully,

Adrian

Work and Careers

Sometimes we say that someone we know is “a square peg in around hole.” This simply means that the
person we are talking about is not suited for the job he is doing. He may be a bookkeeper who really
wants to be an actor or a mechanic who likes coking. Unfortunately many people in the world are
“square pegs”. They are not doing, for one reason or another. As a result they probably are not doing a
very good job and certainly they are not happy.

Choosing the right career is very important. Most of us spend a great part of our life at our jobs. For that
reason we should try to find out what our talents are and how we can use them. We can do this through
aptitude tests, interviews with specialists, and study books in our field or interests.

There are many careers opened to each of us. Perhaps we like science. Then we might prepare ourselves
to be chemists, physicists, or biologists. May be our interest take us into the business world and such
work as accounting, personal management or public relations. Many persons find their places in the
government service. Teaching, newspaper work, medicine, engineering and many other fields offer
fascinating careers to person with talent and training.
