the bird throughout the piece?
a. The flute sounds very light and fleeting. This represents how a bird is small and
energetic but fragile and sensitive. The flute is also playing in a higher register to mimic
birds singing.
7. Describe the timbre of the oboe. How does the color and character of the oboe accurately
depict the duck throughout the piece?
a. The oboe plays within the duck’s natural range and the way the reed functions on the
oboe helps to portray a duck’s call. The oboe also has a slight lilt to it that makes the
image of the duck come through much more clearly.
8. Describe the timbre of the clarinet. How does the color and character of the clarinet accurately
depict the cat throughout the piece?
a. The clarinet sounds sneaky, just like a cat on a fence top. It has a warm sound like a
fluffy, warm cat. It also sounds very nimble and agile.
9. Describe the timbre of the bassoon. How does the color and character of the bassoon accurately
depict the grandfather throughout the piece?
a. The bassoon has a very demanding and bassy sound, like a protective grandfather.
