Reaction Paper on Global Food Waste

Food is one of the most important to us since this will keep us thriving in our
environment besides water and other physiological needs. Last week, March 6, 2018, Tuesday,
we watched a short video from TED-Ed about global food waste. This video increased my
understanding and knowledge about the broad scope of the issue.

I mostly agreed with what was discussed in the video. Nowadays, there are many
companies that are emerging and as these companies grow, we can’t deny that food waste is also
increasing in a fast way. This global food waste scandal which is not just happening on our
household plates but can also be observed from the different levels of the food supply chains.

But this is not a problem only to developing countries- most countries, developing or not
suffers from food waste. This is such a shame because poverty is still present in every country,
but food wastes still increase as if there are no people who suffer from hunger. Although most of
the global food waste was contributed by large companies, individuals can help lessen it by just
purchasing what they only need and eating even the tiniest bit of food in their plate. In our home,
we consume the food that we have as long as we can and feed to dogs the leftovers which are no
longer edible. The video raised my awareness regarding the roots of the global food waste which
also makes me want to spread this information and advocacy because of its negative effect that
can backlash to us especially in unfortunate countries. To think that global food waste does not
only harm the people but also our environment where we get our source of food, we should not
take advantage of our resources. I was saddened by the fact that there are foods which are just as
edible to eat but instead go to waste because of standards from supermarkets which we have
influence since the supermarkets will not make such standards if we buy food without being so
sensitive and picky. I am not saying that we should not be careful towards buying and selecting
our food, but I just want to point out that not because it does not look appealing to our eyes is it
not edible and safe. We should stop abusing the availability of the food around us.

Everyday, there are various technologies being developed in every corner of the world.
And as we all know food waste will never be erased but can be lessened. This can also be
achieved by the emerging ideas of researchers with the aid of technology and partnering with
supermarkets and other companies. In addition to that, since we cannot stop farmers from
planting and harvesting their produce, maybe they can save the rejected yields from being
dumped by selling them even at a lower price in which even the poor can buy. These little
actions can somehow improve the whole situation in the long run.
