3D Printing in the Classroom

Role: Connector

Quote: “With earlier 3D printers you have to spend a lot of time making sure the screws are
tightened, that the extruder nozzle isn't caught, that you've set all the settings for how fast the
filament should be pulled through, for setting the temperature of the tray."

Connection: When I was a part of my high school's business incubator program a lot of
businesses used our high schools 3D printer to create prototypes of their business products. We
had a lesson one day in class specifically on how to use the 3D printer. We learned what to
check on the printer, what each button meant, what we should do if things were to go wrong,
and more.

Quote: “We need to admit to kids when we're not the experts and ask them for their help in
learning together.”

Connection: During my senior year of high school I had a brand new calculus math teacher. It
was her first year working at my high school and she was very confused on how to use our
school’s online platform, Schoology (which is EXACTLY like Canvas). She admitted this to our
class and we took the time that day and so forth to help teach her the in’s and out’s in relation to
how to use Schoology!

Quote: "Now they have to use measurements to get it done because it matters to them, not
because I told them to."

Connection: This reminds me of the business incubator program I was in as well. When we
would work on our businesses we were not doing it so that we could just “get it done.” We were
working hard on our businesses because it mattered to us. We were passionate about what we
were doing and we worked hard in order to succeed.
