A Prokaryote and Eukaryote Introduction

3. In order to understand the endosymbiotic theory, it is important to understand the difference between modern day
prokaryotes and eukaryote cells. In the prokaryote (left) and eukaryote (right) speech bubbles, write how these cells would
introduce themselves (if they had the ability)!

I am an eukaryote! I have ribosomes, a cell

membrane, nucleus, and membrane-bound
I am a prokaryote! I have ribosomes and organelles including a mitochondrion. If I'm
a cell membrane like the eukaryote, but photosynthetic, I may have a chloroplast too!
I do not have a nucleus. I also do not
have any membrane-bound organelles!

Caption It! Answer Key

Scientific theories must be supported by evidence. The video specifically mentions three facts that can support the
endosymbiotic theory. (Please note: there are more that you can explore not included in the video!) These three facts are
represented by comics from the video. For each comic, provide a caption that describes the supporting fact. These words
must be used at least once in the table below: mitochondria, chloroplast, bacteria.

4.

Mitochondria and chloroplasts have their OWN DNA. This

is separate from the DNA found in the nucleus.
Mitochondria and chloroplast DNA is arranged in a similar
way to prokaryote DNA---specifically, bacterial DNA.

5.

The sizes of mitochondria and chloroplasts tend to

be similar to the size of bacteria.

6.
When mitochondria and choloroplasts divide---which
they can divide all on their own, independently---they
divide in a way that is similar to how bacteria divide.

Answer Key Note: As the video mentions, these are not the only facts used to support the endosymbiotic theory!
