CELLS- BASIC UNITS OF LIFE

Name: Frankie GIuliano

Introduction
We have started the semester examining the characteristics of living things, and we just
wrapped up talking about the biomolecules that construct all living things. Since we know what
carbohydrates, proteins, lipids, and nucleic acids all do for living things, we now are going to
transition to the composition of living organisms at the starting point, CELLS!!!!

Cell Theory
Read this article, watch this video , and view this slideshow to learn all about cell
theory. When finished, fill in the following information:

3 Parts of Cell Theory:

1. All living things are made of cells.

2. Cells are a basic unit of structure and function in an organism.

3. Cells come from reproduction from existing cells.

Scientists and their contributions to Cell Theory:

Prokaryotic vs. Eukaryotic Cells

There are two basic types of cells, prokaryotic cells and eukaryotic cells. The main difference
between eukaryotic and prokaryotic cells is that eukaryotic cells have a nucleus. The nucleus is
where cells store their DNA, which is the genetic material.

Read this article on Prokaryotic vs. Eukaryotic Cells and watch this video. When
finished, answer the questions below:

1. What do all cells have in common? Structures

2. What are organelles? A structure in a cell
3. Compare the location of the genetic material of eukaryotic cells and prokaryotic cells.
4. What are ribosomes? It's found in a cell and preforms biological protein synthesis
5. What are the only prokaryotes? Single celled organisms
6. Which prokaryotes are multicellular? None

CHALLENGE TIME!
Play this PLIX to solidify our knowledge of Prokaryotic and Eukaryotic cells.

When finished, review with this Quizizz! (:

Once you are finished, complete the Venn Diagram below.

cells evolved from Prokaryotic

Microscope Review
View this slideshow, and review Cell Theory as well as Microscope Review! Answer the
following questions:

1. For the following objectives, give the total magnification. Remember, we always
multiply the eyepiece (10x) by the objective.
