LIFE IN A MAASAI VILLAGE

The Maasai people of Africa are famous all over the world. They speak a language
called Maa and they live in Kenya and Tanzania. They are usually tall and thin and
they often wear a shuka (shukas are the traditional red clothes of the Maasai).

Today I am in a Maasai village in Kenya. It is only six o’clock in the morning but it is
very hot. The Maasai people get up early with the sun. I can see two old men with
mobile phones near a tree. The other people in the village are busy. Every morning,
the men take their animals – cows, sheep and goats – out of the village to find food
and water. At the end of the day they bring the animals back to the village. There are
lions in the area and lions like eating cows! The Maasai love their animals and a man
with lots of animals is rich.

Maasai women have a lot of work. They make houses for their family, they collect
water, wood for the fire and food like herbs and roots, they wash clothes and they
cook for their family. The Maasai have only two meals a day – one in the morning
and one in the evening. They usually drink the milk from their cows and sometimes
eat meat from their animals.
