Poor and Rich Country: DEVELOPMENT AND EDUCATIONAL SYSTEM BETWEEN THE
TWO
This collage shows the difference between the poor and rich country in terms of
development and educational system and status of the two. When it comes to development in
poor countries, it is slower as you can see in picture above where countries which is not
economically stable are those development having a slow movement. Many slums are found in
poor countries especially in urban places. However, development in rich country are fast as you
can see in the picture above, rich countries are advanced, organized and civilized. In terms of
educational system, poor countries tend to have a low type of education, it is hard for those in
poor countries to achieve their goal in life unlike in rich countries where everyone can afford going
to school and the system are advanced. Educational system in rich country are hi-tech and using
different kinds of technology in learning.

Make an essay identifying the characteristics of the Global South in relation to the social
conditions of the Philippines.

PHILIPPINES AS PART OF GLOBAL SOUTH

Philippines is a sovereign archipelago country in South East Asia situated in the Western
Pacific Ocean. The country is divided into three geographical divisions: Luzon, Visayas, and
Mindanao. These group of islands houses picturesque and breath-taking views. We have the
perfect cone-shaped Mayon Volcano in Albay, the crystal-clear waters of Maria Cristina Falls in
Iligan, the man-made stairway to heaven of Banaue Rice Terraces, the route to another dimension
through Palawan’s Underground River, the powder-white sand of Boracay in Aklan, and the
bumpy Mt. Pinatubo trek in Sta. Juliana, Capas. Who would not be amazed by these natural
wonders?. But despite of having a beautiful tourist destination we can’t deny the fact that
Philippines belongs to a Third World Country or also know as Global South. What are the
characteristics of Global south and what characteristics that makes Philippines a part of Global
South. Does this picturesque and breath-taking views helps the Philippines to step up as a
developed country?
The Global South is defined by Odeh, (2010) represents mainly agrarian economies in
Africa, India, China, Latin America and others that are not as economically sound and politically
stable as their global North counterparts and tend to be characterized by turmoil, war, conflict,
poverty, anarchy and tyranny. Southern states are generally poorer developing countries with
younger, more fragile democracies heavily dependent on primary sector exports and frequently
share a history of past colonialism by Northern states. Global South are those groups of countries
which characterized as having most countries are the one which were colonized, countries having
an poor quality of education, countries where slum are found in urban places, countries having
frail in economic stability, the main exporters of raw materials for the products, countries which is
less developed countries in terms of technology, livelihood and economy and when it comes to
financial institutions South Global countries received the most help from International Fund
Institutions.
Philippines being rich in natural resources are considered and belong to a third world
country or also known as Global South. Way back in Philippine History, we are colonized by
Spanish, Americans, and Japanese which is interconnected to the first characteristics of Global
South which is most countries are the one which were colonized. According to Heralth, The
Philippines ranks as the 25th in the list of countries with the worst education system. Our government
uses only 2.7% of the country’s GDP—which is, at an estimate, eight from 304 billion pesos—which
is not enough to sustain an effective education system. With these, it only proves that Philippines has
a poor quality in when it comes to education status. When it comes to the third characteristics
mentioned above which is countries where slums are found on urban places, Philippines are on the
list where slums are in urban places especially in Tondo Manila which it was mentioned by Miss
Universe 2018 Catriona Gray. When it comes to the next characteristics which is having a frail
economic stability, the Philippine according to Anacleto Lacebal was stable for the first four decade of
this century, but in the second half of this fourth and the first half of the fifth, the Philippine economy
while operating at a higher price level had tendencies towards instability. This only means that
countries belong to Global South is undeveloped and have a economic instability. Because of having
a rich in natural resources, Philippines participated in global activity in the means of exporting raw
materials in different countries. Countries belong in Global South mostly the main exporters of raw
materials for the products since they are lack of machines and equipments in making the products.
Because of being less developed, technology, livelihood and economy in the Philippines are not so
advanced and stable. That’s why most countries belong in the Global South are the exporters of raw
materials and importers of products. It is ironic since the raw materials is come from us but we import
products made of materials we export. When it comes to financial institutions, South Global countries
received the most help from International Funds Organization that’s why Philippines have debt in
countries which financially stable. The characteristics of Global South and Philippines are
interconnected so it simply means that Philippines is a developing country or simply known that
Philippines is one of the country belong in Global South.

As mentioned above the breath taking and picturesque view of places found in the Philippines,
it somehow helps to make our country developed not in an instant but in a slower movements. As what
the Philippine slogan stated, “It’s more fun in the Philippines”, more tourist attraction and more tourist
will lead to the growth of our country. Philippine economy will rise sooner as tourist destination attract
more tourist and foreign individuals.
Therefore, being a part of Global South has disadvantage and also advantages. But we cannot
denied the fact that disadvantages are most dominant in Global South. Philippines being part of Global
South is more prone to colonization since global south are countries which were colonized. But since
then, Philippines has it’s way to become a part of Global North not now but soon, because being part
of Global North takes handwork and time.
