1. Describe the community service/professional activity/s you attended or participated with (be
One of the professional activities that I participated in was an online course from the American
Association of Critical Care Nurses on Covid-19 Pulmonary, ARDS and Ventilator Resources.
For this course there were 4 main sections and then within each section there were 2-4
subsections that contained scenarios, information, and practice questions. Before taking the test
at the end of each section there was a review section with questions that were similar to the ones
on the test. You needed to get at least an 80% on the test at the end of each section to pass.
2. Where was this held and what was was program/activity length?
This activity was held as an online course on the AACN website, was about 4.5 hours long and
Doing this online course was very interesting and I feel that I gained a lot of valuable
information that can be used in the clinical setting once I am a nurse. I also thought it was a nice
review to have since it has been a few months since I worked with patients who were on
ventilators. In addition to reviewing ventilators and their settings, it addressed ABGs, oxygen
delivery methods and had practice questions that helped me learn the priorities when caring for
patients who have a respiratory illness. This was valuable to me as some of the content I had
forgotten.
4. How would you continue to use this experience throughout your nursing career?
This experience will be helpful throughout my nursing career especially if I end up working in
the NICU. While this course was focused mainly on adults in the ICU, I may still take care of an
infant that is ventilated or even has a tracheostomy so knowing basic care and priorities is
important. Even if I don’t end up working in the NICU, reviewing the types of oxygen delivery
will be useful as many other units will have patients who need oxygen during their
hospitalization.
5. Would you recommend this specific communnity/professional experience in the future; why
I would definitely recommend this professional experience to other nurses in the future. It is a
great review of what to expect while caring for a patient who is ventilated, on oxygen or
experiencing respiratory failure. Especially now with Covid-19 having a huge impact on patients
respiratory system I think this activity is very useful, even if someone doesn’t work in the ICU or
care for Covid patients. Besides the information being useful and learning things I didn’t know
