Research methods

Research Site and • In this comparative study, 565 participants were exposed
Participants randomly to four different exhibitions: two-dimensional
collections of art and aircraft museums and three-dimensional
tours of similar museums.
 Students from eight different classes (1480 in total) were offered extra-
credit by their instructors to participate in this study.

 Those who agreed to participate in the study received an email from the
researchers with a link to the questionnaire. Participants could complete
the study from anywhere, and the Web site links to the museums were
embedded in the questionnaire.

 After allowing 3 weeks for the completion of the activity, we attained

responses from 670 individuals; however, the responses of 105
participants were discarded if: (a) Individuals showed a similar pattern in
their answers implying they had not taken the experiment seriously, (b)
the surveys were partially completed, (c) it took them less than 10 min to
complete it, or (d) individuals did not answer the questions about the
• Data Collection Tools objects that they had to interact with in the museum, as will be explained
in the next section.

 Thus, 565 students were considered for the study

 Hierarchical multivariate ordinary least squares (OLS) regressions

complemented with a bootstrap test were used to assess the predicted
mediating effects of involvement on attitudes toward museums and to
examine whether participants in the virtual museums tour conditions

present a higher sense of mediated presence and a more positive
attitude and stronger intentions to visit the real museum than
participants in the online exhibition conditions.

 The OLS regression models were divided into two blocks. The first
Action plan or strategies block includes demographic variables and also those recognized in
involved prior research as affecting participants’ attitudes toward museums,
such as interest in art and in new technologies, frequency of museums
visits, Internet use and experience using virtual tools to interact with
others (e.g., Second Life).
 The variables in the second block were related to their experience
interacting with the stimulus (e.g., sense of mediated presence) and
the condition in which they participated (3D or 2D and art or aircraft
museums).

 Results indicate that whereas 3D tours have a strong effect on users’

Results intentions to visit the real museum, cognitive involvement and sense of
presence mediate the association between these variables.

.
 In terms of managerial implications, our study shows that if
Summary of findings educational professionals want to stimulate their students to visit
museums, 3D tours appear to be more effective for engaging learners
through a realistic-looking environment. By offering richer perceptual
cues and multimodal feedback (e.g., users can view 3D objects from
multiple viewpoints or zoom in/out the objects), the study suggests
that participants may increase their reasoning
