Version 1.00 3 0 0 0 3 45
Pre-requisites/ Student should have knowledge of RCC Design at BE level
Exposure
Co-requisites

COURSE OBJECTIVES
1. To develop an understanding of and appreciation for basic concepts in proportioning and
design of bridges in terms of aesthetics, geographical location and functionality.
2. To help the student develop an intuitive feeling about the sizing of bridgeelements, i.e.
develop a clear understanding of conceptual design.
3. To understand the load flow mechanism and identify loads on bridges.
4. To carry out a design of bridge starting from conceptual design, selecting suitable bridge
geometry to sizing of its elements.
COURSE OUTCOMES
4. Students will understand the concept of planning and investigation for bridges.
5. Students will be able to analyse and design the superstructure for various types of RCC
bridges.
6. Students will be able to design the bearings, expansion joints and substructures.
COURSE DESCRIPTION
The course begins with the planning and investigation for bridges consisting of location, economic
span, scour depth, loadings and many more. Design of elements of bridges like slab of bridge,
piers, abutments, and bearings will be studied followed by analysis and calculation of design
forces for which the elements are to be designed.
