REVISION QUESTIONS: CHAPTER 6 – MOMENTUM & IMPULSE

DEADLINE: WEDNESDAY 12TH AUGUST 2020, 6:00 PM
READ BEFORE ATTEMPTING:
This is a graded homework that tests your ability to recall specific facts and knowledge
which you have encountered during your classes and your own practice. You are free to go
through your notes which you made during classes to help you complete this task.
Each question is marked and you will be awarded according to how accurately you
present your answers. Any question that requires calculations must be accompanied by
the formula used, appropriate working, final answer and the specified units. Absence of
any of these will result in deduction of marks.
Space will be provided to you to fill in your answers. If you require more space, then
adjust the textbox to your requirements. You will save the document you worked on, save
it with your name and then send the word file to my email for grading. Once I have
finished checking, I will send back the graded file which will also contain any other
additional feedback. Double check your word document before submitting and make sure
that the spacing, other specifications and your answers are all in order.
It is expected that you submit this task within the deadline. If submissions are delayed,
marks will be deduced. If you have finished this task and wish to submit before the
deadline, then you are welcome to do so and is encouraged.
Make sure to make an attempt at every question. Even if your answer may be wrong, you
will be entitled to receive partial marks. This task is out of 45 Marks.

1 A ball of mass 0.5 kg, moving along a horizontal surface hits a fixed vertical wall at right
angles. The ball rebounds at right angles to the wall with speed 4.5 ms -1. Given that the
magnitude of the impulse exerted on the ball by the wall is 4 Ns, find the speed of the ball
just before it hits the wall. [3]

I =m ( fv−uv )
4
=4.5−u=−3.5 m s−1
0.5

So initial speed =3.5 m s−1

2A
ball of mass 0.4 kg is dropped from a height of 3.5 m above the horizontal ground. After
hitting the ground, it bounces to a height of 2.2 m above the ground. Find the magnitude of
the impulse received by the ball from the ground. [4]

v 2=2 g ( 3.5 ) =≫ v=8.28 m s−1

0=u2 +2 (−9.8 ) ( 2.2 )

u=−6.57 m s−1
I =¿
I =5.94 Ns
3A
particle P of mass 250 g is at rest on a smooth horizontal plane. A second particle Q of mass
200 g is projected along the plane with speed u ms-1 and collides directly with P. On impact
the particles join together and move on with speed 5 ms-1. Find the value of u. [4]

0.2 ( u ) +0.25 ( 0 )= ( 0.2+ 0.25 ) 5

u=11.25 m s−1

4A
particle A of mass 4m is moving along a smooth horizontal surface with speed 2u. It collides
with another particle B of mass 3m which is moving with the same speed along the same
straight line but in the opposite direction. Given that A is brought to rest by collision, find:
a) The velocity of B after the collision. [3]

4 m ( 2 u ) +3 m (−2 u ) =4 m ( 0 ) +3 m ( v )
2 mu=3 mv
2
v= um s−1
3

2
b) The magnitude of the impulse given by A to B in the collision. [3]

I =4 m ( 32 u− (−2u) )
8
I =4 m( u)
3
32
I= uN

5A
car of mass 800 kg is travelling along a straight horizontal road. A constant retarding force of
F N reduces the speed of the car from 18 ms-1 to 12 ms-1 in 2.4 s. Calculate:
a) The value of F. [4]

12−18 −5 −2
a= = ms
2.4 2

F=800∗ ( −52 )=−2000 N

b)
Constant retarding Force=2000 N
b)
( Is it really worth 4 marks, or was that a typo ) b)
b)
The distance moved by the car in these 2.4 s. [3]

( 18−12 )∗2.4∗1

2
d=7.2m

6A
particle A of mass m is moving with speed 2u in a straight line on a smooth horizontal table.
It collides with another particle B of mass km which is moving in the same straight line on
the table with speed u in the opposite direction to A. In the collision, the particles form a
2
single particle which moves with speed u in the original direction of A’s motion. Find the
3
value of k. [3]

2
m ( 2u ) + km (−u ) = u ( m+ km)
3
2 2
2 mu−kmu= mu+ kmu
3 3
4 5
mu= kmu 3
3 3
4
k = kg( althoughthe question does n' t really state that unit )
5
7 Particles A and B have mass 0.5 kg and 0.2 kg respectively. They are moving with speeds 5
ms-1 and 2 ms-1 respectively in the same direction along the same straight line on a smooth
horizontal surface when they collide. After the collision A continues to move in the same
direction with speed 4 ms-1. Find the speed of B after the collision. [3]

0.5 ( 5 ) +0.2 ( 2 )=0.5 ( 4 ) +0.2 ( v )

v=4.5 m s−1

8A
bullet is fired by a gun which is 4 kg heavier than the bullet. Immediately after the bullet is
fired, it is moving with speed 200 ms-1 and the gun recoils in the opposite direction with
speed 5 ms-1. Find:
a) The mass of the bullet. [2]

200∗m+ ( 4∗−5 )=0

1
m= kg
10

b)
The mass of the gun. [2]

1
m= +4
10
m=4.1 kg

9 Two particles P and Q have masses 3m and 2m respectively. The particles are connected
by a light inextensible string. Initially P and Q are at rest on a smooth horizontal plane with
the string slack. Particle P is then projected along the plane directly away from Q with speed
4u. At the same instant, particle Q is projected along the plane in the opposite direction
with speed 3u. Find:
a) The common speed of the particles immediately after the string becomes taut. [3]

4
3 m ( 4 u ) +2 m (−3 u )=v ( 3 m+ 2m )
6 mu=5 vm
6
v= um s−1
5

b)
The magnitude of the impulse exerted on Q at the instant when the string becomes taut.
[4]

I =2 m ( 65 u−(−3 u))
I =8.4 muN

10
Two particles A and B, of masses 3 kg and 2 kg respectively, are moving in the same
direction on a smooth horizontal table when they collide directly. Immediately before
collision, the speed of A is 4 ms-1 and the speed of B is 1.5 ms-1. In the collision, the particles
join to form a single particle C. Find the speed of C immediately after the collision. [4]
