READ BEFORE ATTEMPTING:

 Fill in your answers in the boxes provided.
 Adjust the boxes according to your space requirements. Other than this, you are
NOT PERMITTED to change any other specifications of this paper.
 Ensure that an attempt is made at every question.
 Ensure sufficient and necessary workings, values and units are presented. Absence
of any of these will lead to deduction of marks.
 Partial marks are awarded even if a certain aspect in the answer is not correct.
 When a numerical value of g is required, take g = 9.8 ms-2 and provide your
answers to two or three significant figures unless stated otherwise in the question.
 The marks for each question are shown in brackets.
 This paper is out of 75 marks.
EXAMINER’S FEEDBACK

1 A ball is released from rest at a point which is 10 m above a wooden floor. Each time the
ball strikes the floor, it rebounds with three-quarters of the speed with which it strikes the
floor. Find the greatest height above the floor reached by the ball:
a) The first time it rebounds from the floor. [4]
b) The second time it rebounds from the floor. [4]
2 A coastguard station O monitors the movement of ships in a channel. At noon, the
station’s radar records two ships moving with constant speed. Ship A is at the point with
position vector (-3i + 10j) km relative to O and has velocity (2i + 2j) km h -1. Ship B is at the
point with position vector (6i + j) km and has velocity (-i + 5j) km h -1.
a) Show that if the two ships maintain these velocities they will collide. [4]
The coastguard radios ship A and orders it to reduce its speed to move with velocity (i + j)
km h-1. Given that A obeys this order and maintains this new constant velocity:
b) Find an expression for the vector AB at time t hours after noon. [3]
c) Find to three significant figures, the distance between A and B at 1500 hours. [5]
d) Find the time at which B will be due north of A. [7]
2 p
3 Two forces ( ) N and ( ) N, act on a particle P of mass m kg. The resultant of the two
5 q
forces is R.
1
a) Given that R acts in a direction which is parallel to the vector (
). [4]
−2
b) Given that p = 1 and that P moves with an acceleration of magnitude 15√ 5 ms-2, find
the value of m. [7]
4 A block of wood A of mass 0.5 kg rests on a rough horizontal table and is attached to one
end of a light inextensible string. The string passes over a small smooth pulley P fixed at the
edge of the table. The other end of the string is attached to the ball B of mass 0.8 kg which
hangs freely below the pulley. The resistance to motion of A from the rough table has a
constant magnitude F N. The system is released from rest with the string taut. After release,
B descends a distance of 0.4 m in 0.5 s. Modelling A and B as particles, calculate:
a) The acceleration of B [4]
b) The tension in the string. [4]
c) The value of F. [4]
d) State how in your calculations you have used the information that the string is
inextensible. [1]
5 A particle of mass m kg is sliding down a rough slope that is angled at α to the horizontal.
The coefficient of friction between the particle and the slope is μ. Show that the
acceleration of the particle is independent of its mass. [9]
6 A box of mass 3 kg lies on a rough plane inclined at 40˚ to the horizontal. The box is held in
equilibrium by means of a horizontal force of magnitude X N. The line of action of the force

2
is in the same vertical plane as the line of greatest slope of the inclined plane. The
coefficient of friction between the box and the plane is 0.3 and the box is in limiting
equilibrium and is about to move up the plane.
a) Find X. [6]
b) Find the normal reaction between the box and the plane. [2]
7 A uniform beam AB of weight WB and length 14 m, hangs in equilibrium in a horizontal
position from two vertical cables attached at points C and D where AC = 4 m and BD = 6 m. a
weight of 180 N is hung from A and the beam is about to tilt. The weight is removed and a
different weight V N, is hung from B and the beam does not tilt. Find the maximum value of
V. [7]
