Subject Science _
Time Needed for Lesson 20-25 mintues Lesson Concept Physical Science

PA STANDARD(S) (Write out standards):

3.2.1.A.6 – Participate in simple investigations of matter to answer a question or to test a prediction.

3.2.1.A.5 – Recognize that everything is made of matter
3.2.1.A.4 – Observe and describe what happens when substances are heated or cooled. Distinguish between
changes that are reversible and not reversible.
3.2.1.A.3 – Identify how heating, melting, cooling, etc., may cause changes in the properties of materials
3.2.1.A.1 – Observe and describe the properties of liquids and solids. Investigate what happens when solids are
mixed with water and other liquids are mixed with water.
BIG IDEAS/ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS:

BIG IDEA: Physical properties help us to understand the world.

ESSENTIAL QUESTIONS: What are physical properties of objects? How are physical properties of objects
discovered? What effect does energy have on the physical properties of objects?

OBJECTIVE(S) (Be sure to include all four parts):

Students will be able to repeat the words the teacher says 95% of the time
Students will be able to answer the teachers questions on the words 95% of the time
Students will have a better understanding of the properties of matter 80% of the time

MATERIALS:
 Different types of crackers
o Club
o Tollhouse
o Gram
o Animal
o Pita
o Ritz
o Worksheet
o Pencil
o Rulers
o Napkins
o Ancho chart

ACTIVITIES (There are three sections here):

OPENING (Introduction, purpose, hook)

 Teacher will start off by going over the anchor chart for the properties of matter
 Teacher will explain that we are going to go a taste test while learning about the physical properties of
matter,
 Teacher will demonstrate what the students are going to do
o Look (shape and size) (students have rulers on their desk name tags)
o Touch
o Taste the cracker and then fill in the work sheet
 (teacher will demonstrate)

BODY (Bulleted step by step/differentiation must be included)

o All students will get 5 different crackers and a work sheet.
o Together as a class everyone will go through the crackers starting with the same one and
complete the worksheet/ taste it
 It is okay if people have different opinions
o Students will fill out their worksheets based of their opinions of the crackers.

CLOSURE (Wrap up and brief summary): How will you plan to restate the lesson objective?
 Class will come back together and talk about what they thought about each cracker.
 All students will be able to share their experience with this lab.

ACCOMMODATIONS/MODIFICATIONS:
 Students who need help with this will be placed near the teacher for extra support.
 Advanced students will answer different questions about the project on another worksheet that will be
passed out. This worksheet is meant to enhance their learning.

ASSESSMENT: (How you will determine that student has mastered objectives?): Consider formative and
summative assessment measures for all levels of differentiation.
 Teacher will know that students understand the concept by their participation with the activity. By
following and doing the worksheets
