COUNT NOUNS
1. Count Nouns: are things which can be counted. That means
that there can be more than one of them.

– I need three books for tomorrow.

• The noun book is a count noun.

2. Non-Count Nouns: are nouns that you can not count one by
one.
– Please, bring me some water.
water cannot be easily counted.
• The noun water is a non-count noun.
• Count Nouns refer to things that you can easily count.

For nouns that end with a consonant, add s.

For some nouns that end in o, add es. If you are not

NON COUNT NOUNS
• Non-Count Nouns refer to things that by their nature are not
easily countable such as substances, mass forms and abstract
ideas.

We usually treat uncountable nouns as singular : We
use a singular verb. For example:
• This news is very important.
• Your luggage looks heavy.
You can count uncountable nouns if you use:
• A piece of… cheese
• A bowl of… soup
• A cup of… tea
• A bottle of…wine
• A carton of…milk MILK

• A bar of… chocolate


Here are some of the most common containers /
quantity expressions for these uncountable nouns:
advice - a piece of advice
baggage - a piece of baggage
bread - a slice of bread, a loaf of bread
equipment - a piece of equipment
furniture - a piece of furniture
garbage - a piece of garbage
information - a piece of information
knowledge - a fact
luggage - a piece of luggage, a bag, a suitcase
money - a note, a coin
musica – a song, a piece
news - a piece of news
pasta - a plate of pasta, a serving of pasta
research - a piece of research, a research project
travel - a journey, a trip
work - a job, a position
We don’t use indefinite articles (a/an) with uncountable nouns.
We use QUANTIFIERS. Look at the examples:

a sack of rice a loaf of bread a jar of honey

a box of cereal a slice of pizza a cup of coffee


a piece of cake a bar of chocolate a can of soda

a bag of chips a mug of beer a spoon of salt

a package of cookies a carton of milk a tub of ice-cream

2.- She uses a computer

1.- I eat rice every day . I don’t say I eat a rice every
day

2.- He usually drink some water.

3.- She wants a cup of coffee.

QUANTIFIERS: SOME, ANY, MUCH A LITTLE, A LOT OF
NONCOUNT NOUNS

• You can use much, a lot of,a little and any with
noncount nouns.
• Example :

• I drank too much tea.( mucho)


• I ate a lot of ( demasiado ) bread and a little( un
poco ) meat.
• I didn’t eat any butter
QUANTIFIERS: SOME, ANY, A FEW, MANY , A LOT OF
COUNT NOUNS
• We use many with plural count nouns in positive statements and questions

1.- We bought many books last week

2.- Were there many people At the Movie theater?

• We use a few with count nouns

1.- I have a few candies for you

3.- We use some in affirmative statements, only in the case , you offer something to
somebody, we use some in questions.

Would you like some ice cream ?


• We use any in negative statements and questions

1.- I don’t have any pens

2.- Do you have any questions ?

4.- We use a lot of with count nouns and non count nouns

• A lot of fruit grows in Ica

• That’s a lot of grapes
