ASSIGNMENT 2
Due on Wednesday, Oct 7, 2020

Name M.U.N. Number

1. The purpose of this project is to understand continuous map on a compact metric space
(X, d).
(1a) Let S be a subset of X and assume that for every continuous map f : X → R, the
restriction of f to S attains a maximum on S. Prove that S is compact.
(1b) Let g : X → X be an isometry. Prove f (X) = X.

2. The purpose of this project is to understand some basic image properties of continuous
mappings between two metric spaces (X1 , d1 ) and (X2 , d2 ).
(2a) If f : X1 → X2 is continuous, (Kj )∞
j=1 is a sequence of nonempty compact subsets of
X1 with Kj+1 ⊆ Kj , and K = ∩∞ K
j=1 j , prove f (K) = ∩∞j=1 f (Kj ).

(2b) Let f : X1 → X2 be a continuous surjective map such that d1 (p, q) ≤ d2 (f (p), f (q)) for
every pair of points p, q ∈ X1 . If (X1 , d1 ) (resp. (X2 , d2 )) is complete, must (X2 , d2 ) (resp.
(X1 , d1 )) be complete? Give a proof or a counterexample.
(2c) Let fj : Rn → Rm be continuous for j ∈ N. Suppose K is a compact subset of Rn and
fj → f uniformly on K. Prove that S = f (K) ∪ ( ∪∞
j=1 fj (K)) is compact.

3. The purpose of this project is to understand some further properties of the fixed point
theorem.
(3a) Let f : R → R be monotonically increasing (perhaps discontinuous). Suppose 0 < f (0)
and f (100) < 100. Prove f (x) = x for some x ∈ R.
(3b) Prove that there exists a unique continuous function f : [0, 1] → R such that
Z 1
f (x) = sin x + f (y) exp(−x − y − 1)dy.
