Complimentary Colors 

Grade Level: 7th Grade


 
Title of Lesson Plan: My Name As A Complimentary Color   
 
Objective: SWBAT ​apply​ complimentary colors to design and produce a work of art 
that showcases their name. 
 
Standard: VA:Cr2.3.7a Apply visual organizational strategies to design and produce 
a work of art, design, or media that clearly communicates information or ideas. 
 
Materials:   STEP ONE: CHECK FOR 
- Construction paper (red, green,  UNDERSTANDING 
blue, orange, yellow, and purple)  - Ask students if they know what 
cut into squares  complimentary colors are 
- School Glue Sticks  (definition) 
- Scissors  - Ask students if they can name the 
- Clear Scotch Tape  complimentary color pairs 
(example) 
Motivation:  STEP TWO: MAKE ART! 
- Ask students if they know that  - Students will cut the shapes of the 
they can use colors and shapes to  letters of their names out of 
spell their name  construction paper 
- If necessary, show them my  - The cuts have to meet/stay in the

- They will then use the 
negative/positive space from their 
first cuts to make the letters of 
their name again, using the 
complimentary colored paper of 
each letter to do so 
- Students will then glue the letters 
to the papers 
- If they wish, they can tape them 
together

think it will help them in future 
projects 
- Observe students as they work on 
their pop art projects to gather an 
understanding of how helpful the 
 
lesson was
